3 Things done out of 1 celery bunch!

WOW! I actually did 3 things with my bunch of celery.

First thing was , we took some of the stems and did a science experiment with them. Put them in different colors of food coloring. Teach the Little Man how water moves through plants. He can actually see the water go up into the plant.

Second thing that I did was take all of the celery and slice it up. Put it into my food dehydrator. More dehydrated celery to add to my jar for soups. Yummy.

The bottom I put into a small cup of water to get it to start. The one of the right I had done about a week ago and it is starting to grow. This Friday have to go and get some bags of potting soil and get some pots. One of these I am going to keep indoors to see how it does and if it can even be grown indoors. Just to see. I would really love to be able to grow a lot of items indoors in case something happens and going outdoors in not an option. We would still have the fresh veggies and herbs growing for us to eat.

Sore Throat? Cold? Try mint tea!

I always try and keep a pot of mint growing in the house. On my kitchen window sill now is a Herbs in a can  of mint. My son bought me it about 2 weeks ago and they are just sprouting. So cute. But, fresh mint is so good for making a tea with that helps with colds and flu. I add real honey to it and it really soothes a sore throat.

Easy to make:

Put a couple of sprigs of the mint into a teapot and pour in a couple of cups of boiling water. Cover it and let it infuse for a few minutes. Strain it and drink! Add the honey to it right before you drink it.

Also is good for indigestion, nausea, headaches.

If you have no fresh mint you can use dried. Use a teaspoonful per cup.

Bugging In: How to Hunker Down and Survive in an Emergency Situation

Bugging In: How to Hunker Down and Survive in an Emergency Situation (Stay Alive) was a free book for the kindle when this post was written.

Are you prepared to survive in a shelter-in-place emergency situation?
Well, are you? If you are, pat yourself on the back. You're a step ahead of most people. The average citizen turns a blind eye to disaster preparedness and is largely unprepared to handle all but the most minor of emergency situations.

Do you really want to take a chance that could cost you and your family your lives?

The first thing most victims say is, "I never thought it would happen to me." Don't be caught unprepared when an emergency strikes that forces you to take refuge in your own home. The time to get ready for a crisis situation is now. Wait until the last minute and you'll be forced to pay top dollar for food, water and supplies, if you can find them at all. If not, you'll be forced to scavenge for scraps or beg for help, along with hundreds of thousands of others who couldn't be bothered to prepare.

The following topics are covered in this helpful and easy to read book:
  • What hunkering down is and why it's preferred over bugging out.
  • The disasters you should start prepping for.
  • Bugging out vs. bugging in.
  • The meaning of normalcy bias and how it can get you killed.
  • Questions you need to ask yourself in an emergency situation that will help you determine the best course of action.
  • The 5 plans you need in order to survive.
  • Building a Get Home Bag that will give you the best chance of making it home if a disaster occurs while you're away.
  • How long should you prepare to survive on your own?
  • Shelter: Don't make any assumptions.
  • Shutting down utilities.
  • Water . . . Must have water.
  • How to keep from freezing to death when the power is out.
  • How not to starve to death.
  • Staying clean when there's no running water.
  • How to handle first aid emergencies when there is no professional medical care available.
  • How to stay safe when you can't call the cops.
  • How stockpiling alcohol and tobacco might save your life.
  • Why you might not want to run a generator. HINT: There's a better option.
  • The attack that could render all electronic equipment useless and how to protect your equipment.
  • How to communicate when the phones stop working.
  • Appendix #1: A list of supplies you'll need.
  • Appendix #2: Survival skills you're going to need to learn (if you don't already have them).
  • Appendix #3: Step-by-step guide to getting prepped.

Best 50 cents I ever spent!

Weekly trip to thrift store and all I spent was a whole 50 cents! But, what an awesome find! A wooden board that has times tables on little wooden squares. Turn them over for the answers! Little man loves it. Playing with it and learning. I bet there is some handy person out there that could make one of these for themselves.

Homeschool minute - words and spelling

Little man came up with this idea on his own. He takes his word list of the week and uses his letters that I've collected from all of his old games, magnets, etc. Works great for him. Put the word list down and then spell them out with the letters. He also writes them into his word notebook.

Food Storage Recipe - 3-2-1 Mug Cake

This is so easy. When my mom told me this recipe the other night on the phone , I seriously thought that she had lost her mind. But, I love finding ways to make things easy and with stuff that I have plenty of in my food storage. So, I gave it a try and now have a favorite dessert to make for us when we want something quick and just enough for one of us. We usually waste cakes when I make a whole one, I hate to admit. So to be able to make a single serve cake will also be a very frugal thing for us. No more wasting cake!!!

3-2-1 Mug Cake

NEED:

1 box Angel Food Cake Mix

1 box of any flavor cake mix ( We love funfetti cake mix in our house, but you could use any flavor!)

Frosting for when it is done cooking! YUMMY

Pour both boxes of cake mix into a big gallon sized Ziploc bag.

Shake it up and make sure that it is all mixed up very well.

NOW THE FUN PART:

Take a clean coffee mug that is microwave safe. Combine 3 tablespoons of the cake mix with 2 tablespoon of water. Stir this up well and put into the microwave for 1 minute. You do not even have to grease the mug.

Put a dab of frosting on top and eat it right out of the mug.

Right Wing Conspiracy Politics Box Set [

Right Wing Conspiracy Politics Box Set was a free kindle book when this post was written.

America is in danger from within. This exclusive box set reveals eight key ways American values, traditions, and laws are being circumvented to undermine constitutional law and your personal freedoms.

Book 1: Once We Were Kings: The Decline and Fall of the American Empire

The first volume in this box set explores nine key ways federal government policies, social disorder, and a decline in moral values, are destroying democracy in America and threatening your constitutional rights and freedoms.

Book 2: Rise of the Police State and a New World Order

This book discusses what it means to live under an increasingly oppressive government and reveals how technology, police state tactics, false flags, and martial law may be used to destroy America as we know it.

Book 3: Death by a Thousand Cuts: Why America Will Lose the Global War on Terror

This report examines how our institutions, government policies, and self-inflicted intrusions into our private lives are eroding our sacred freedoms and destroying everything that defines us as a free people. America is dying, and unless good people stand up to stop the madness, future generations will refer to our current systems of constitutional law, free enterprise, and democratic republic ideals as legend, or perhaps even urban myths.

Book 4: Regulation Nation: How Government Agencies Circumvent the Legislative Process to Enact Laws and Rob Americans of Their Constitutional Freedoms

"Regulation Nation" documents how government agencies arrogantly flaunt the legislative process and the will of the people in the pursuit of their special interests at the expense of the governed. In addition to limiting the use of your private property and unveiling the invisible hand of commercial enterprise, the obscure and often vague nature of regulations makes it virtually impossible for honest citizens to conduct themselves in accordance with the law.

Book 5: Directive 51: An Expose of the President's Emergency Powers Directive and its Threat to Constitutional Government and Your Personal Freedoms

Leading the charge towards what many see as a trend towards tyranny, is a plan for the continuity of our federal government in the event of an emergency. Directive 51 is a game changer, and may well be the catalyst that sends the nation tumbling into the dustbin of history.

Book 6: UN Arms Trade Treaty: An Expose of the United Nations' Arms Trade Treaty and its Threat to National Sovereignty and the Potential Subversion of the Second Amendment and Your Gun Rights

"UN Arms Trade Treaty" attempts to peel back the shroud of secrecy surrounding the United Nations' efforts to regulate arms trade. While the author is an open supporter of legal civilian gun rights, this text presents an objective analysis of the arms trade treaty.

Book 7: Millennium Goals: A Critical Discussion of the United Nations' Eight Millennium Development Goals and Their Threat to National Sovereignty

Since its inception in the shadow of World War II and the rush to minimize global chaos at the hands of despots, the United Nations has transformed its charter of peace into a mandate to invoke domination of the world's nations, and to neuter national sovereignty. "Millennium Goals" takes a critical look at these goals and how the United Nations intends to implement them around the world.

Book 8: The Hidden War: Cultural Marxism and the Assault on American Core Values and Conservatism

If you like how America is being led, and the direction this nation is going, you will not want to read this book. However, if you have an innate distrust of government, or fear your values and interests are not being represented in City Hall or Washington, then this book is for you.

Take action today to discover how the America we all know and love is in danger of extinction.

Food Storage Recipe - Crockpot Potato Soup

This is a great recipe for a cold Sunday. Set it before you go to Church! Dinner waiting for you.

Crockpot potato soup

NEED:

7 Idaho potatoes

3 small baby onions

4 stalk celery

2 cups chicken stock

2 cups milk

2 cups Heavy Cream

1 Tbsp Mrs. Dash garlic and herb seasoning

Salt and white pepper to taste

Peel the potatoes, wash and put in a bowl of water. Cut up the onions and celery. For this recipe, I used 3 small baby onions, but 1 large one will be okay. Cut the potatoes into 1 inch pieces and add to Crockpot. Add in the cut vegetables. I had some reserved chicken stock and poured it over the vegetables in the Crockpot. Add in 2 cups milk and 2 cups regular heavy cream or half and half is okay. Season with garlic and herb seasoning, salt and white pepper; cover and slow cook on low for about 6 hours or until the vegetables are fork tender. Serve hot with a grilled cheese sandwich on the side.

Never Ending Dryer Sheets

This is such a cool idea and a money saver.

I seen this on Facebook. Not sure who originally posted it or whose idea it is.

~~NEVER ENDING DRYER SHEETS~~

WHAT YOU NEED:

1 Container with an airtight lid (grabbed out of my pantry)

4 SPONGES cut in half ($1.00 for a 4pk at the dollar store)

1 cup of your favorite fabric softener ($0.30 worth of fabric softener)

2 cups water (free from my tap)

WHAT TO DO: Mix the water and fabric softener into a plastic container. Add the cut SPONGES so they can soak in the mixture. When ready to use, squeeze the excess liquid from 1 sponge and place into the dryer with your wet clothes. Run the dryer cycle as normal. Once complete place the now dry sponge back into the container of liquid for use next time. Clothes smell good, are soft and have no static just like the expensive non-reusable dryer sheets.

Bug-Out Bag For Kids!

My Little Man has heard us talking so much and seen us putting together our bug-out bags that he wants one of his own.The first thing that we have to do is find him his own bag that will be comfortable for his to use and not too big. Try not to fill it to full.

Some things that can be put into a child's bug-out bag are:

compass

flashlight

mre

water or personal water filter. I have LifeStraw Personal Water Filter in our bug-out bags and plan on getting one just for him.

There are a few things that he is adding for making himself comfortable. He has a little solar powered radio that also has a charger on it for his tablet and kindle. Yeah, he tries to think of everything. LOL

He also is adding some maps of our area into his bag. Which was a great thing for a 7 year to think of. We hadn't even thought of it. Crazy how smart kids are.

a small knife

a whistle

flint

mirror

granola bars

some stuff to add to bottled water for flavor, so he doesn't get bored with just drinking water!

peanuts

rain poncho

wipes

small first aid kit

hand sanitizer

paracord

fishing kit

and there are sure to be some other things that he want to add. So far it is not very heavy. Could easily be carried by one of us if we had to. But, now he feels better knowing that he has his own bug-out bag.

How to Make a Homemade Wood Stove

You know what's the best part about D.I.Y. guides? The fact that you can construct anything by yourself in turn saving so much on what you would have to spend so much on a normal basis. It's pretty amazing what you can build by yourself nowadays with the help of these D.I.Y. Guides. This time, I'll show you how to make your very own homemade wood stove without needing to break that bank account for too much.

Back then, building your own homemade wood stove meant finding an unused 50 gallon drum a starting from there, but times have changed and innovation has kicked in. Nowadays, using an unused discarded water heater has the capability to hold 3-50 gallons of water. The first step to finding the ideal electric water heater is by finding one without any damage and rust in the heater. Remove the steel wrap around the heater to check for corrosion and rust and remember that this step is very important due for health related concerns and should not be skipped. Next turn the heater on to its side to weld on the metal legs as this will keep the heater up.

The next step will involve making holes to the heater. So make sure to be careful as not to hurt yourself. Make a cut around the upside portion of the heater and weld it back upside down. It is this portion where you should make a few holes because this will aid in the circulation of heat during cooking. Make another hole in the back of the heater as an outlet which will allow the smoke to be taken outside your house via a metal pipe, add a lever here to make sure you can control the intake of air.

Build a grill to cook your food on by cutting vertical strips on the upside portion which you welded back to the stove. Once you're done with this step, you're pretty much done, but you can also add some ventilation pipes to your new "stove" and connecting them to your chimney (if any).

It's pretty amazing how people come up with their own ways to build and construct things and how many of us follow to find out that these innovations really do work. After following this guide on how to make a homemade wood stove, you can casually invite friends and family over because you've cooked dinner on your new homemade wood stove a.k.a. a discarded electric water heater. Interesting isn't it?

Stuart is writing for many websites, He enjoys writing on wide range of topics such as homemade wood stove and how to install a wood stove. You may visit for more details.

What Does Being Frugal Mean?

In the Websters 1828 Dictionary the word FRUGAL Means :

Economical in the use or appropriation of money, goods or provisions of any kind; saving unnecessary expense, either of money or of any thing else which is to be used or consumed; sparing; not profuse, prodigal or lavish. We ought to be frugal not only in the expenditure of money and of goods, but in the employment of time. It is followed by of, before the thing saved; as frugal of time. It is not synonymous with parsimonious, nor with thrifty, as now used.

Frugality Means :

1. Prudent economy; good husbandry or housewifery; a sparing use or appropriation of money or commodities; a judicious use of any thing to be expended or employed; that careful management of money or goods which expends nothing unnecessarily, and applies what is used to a profitable purpose; that use in which nothing is wasted. It is not equivalent to parsimony, the latter being an excess of frugality, and a fault. Frugality is always a virtue. Nor is it synonymous with thrift, in its proper sense; for thrift is the effect of frugality.
Without frugality none can become rich, and with it few would be poor.
2. A prudent and sparing use or appropriation of any thing; as frugality of praise.

  •

50 pound bag of Grits on the way!!!

    Honeyville Food Products
I just put in my order to Honeyville Food Products for a 50 pound bag of white corn grits! Kept in the right conditions they can last up 1 year. But longer if you store them other way. I am also getting some oxygen absorbers and getting out my food saver.

Grits are easy to cook and they fill you up. Great source of iron and protein . http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/generic/grits-cooked-corn-or-hominy-regular

    Simple recipe for buttered grits!

    1 cup of grits

    5 cups of water

    1 teaspoon salt

butter to taste ( we use a lot of real butter!)

In a large pot bring the water to a boil than lower to simmering.

Slowly whisk in the grits and stir them constantly until they thicken up.

Turn the heat to low. They will probably still bubble up every few seconds. Cook for about 30 minutes. Cook longer if they are coarser. Stir them  often so they don't scorch on the bottom.

Once they are tender and cooked add the butter and salt. Serve hot. I always serve mine with scrambled eggs on top.

Homesteaders 'Quick Bites' Guidebook: Raising Chickens - My 5 Top Tips (K.I.S.S Quick Bites) [

Homesteaders 'Quick Bites' Guidebook: Raising Chickens - My 5 Top Tips (K.I.S.S Quick Bites) was a free kindle book when this post was written.

Welcome to my K.I.S.S Quick Bites introduction to Raising Chickens. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) Is part of a series of introductions to the world of homesteading and self-sufficiency. And ‘Quick Bites’ is all about putting essential information in such a way that it can be ‘swallowed whole’, and absorbed at one sitting – so to speak.
Chickens are perhaps one of the easiest of the farm animals to look after, and certainly one of the most instantly productive with regard to egg laying. A ‘must have’ for any homestead, They do however require certain things to be in place before they can ‘perform’ and provide you with a goodly supply of fresh eggs.
This publication lays out the top 5 things I believe must be right, before you will get the best out of your chickens.
