Cooking Without Power

So you've stocked up on all the food you'll need after the end of the world as we know it. You've got wheat, flour, dried foods, canned foods, all kinds of food. But if the worst case scenario happens, will you still have power? There might be power in some areas, but always assume there won't be where you are. And if there isn't, how are you going to cook all that food?
In this modern age of TV dinners, frozen pizzas, canned soups and Hamburger Helper, many people never learned how to cook a meal the old-fashioned way. The majority of city-dwellers are dependent on microwaves, electric stoves, and toasters. But what will they do if the power goes out for an extended period? There are several options:
  • Grill. This is the first and most obvious option. Hopefully you've stocked up on plenty of coal and/or propane. But if you don't have a grill or are out of coal and propane...
  • Camping stove. Acquiring one of these should be a top priority. Coleman makes a great 2 burner stove that you can find on amazon.com. These, too, should always be used outdoors. Make sure you have plenty of Coleman fuel!
  • Fireplace. Try roasting hot dogs and other solid foods on sticks in your fireplace. You can also wrap potatoes and other vegetables in foil and leave them in the fireplace to cook.
  • Campfire. Who doesn't love cooking over a campfire? But you don't want to just roast hot dogs and marshmallows. With a good camp grill you'll be able to cook just about anything.
  • Dutch oven. This is a cast iron pot that you hang over a fire. It's ideal for making soups, stews, and hot drinks. A 4-quart Dutch oven is less than $50. To hang it over the fire, you'll need a fireplace crane or a campfire tripod.
  • Sterno stove. These are good for heating up drinks, canned foods such as chili, Spaghettios and soup. The best thing about them is they're portable, weighing less than a pound. I would get a good Sterno stove kit and some extra canned heat. Tip: Try putting your Sterno stove in a fire pit with a few handfuls of charcoal. This way you can grill while using very little charcoal.
  • Kerosene heater. These are usually used for heating rooms, but are also a great way to boil beans, pasta and other foods or make hot drinks. If the top is flat, just set a pot of water on top. A good kerosene heater can cost over $100, but it's a great thing to add to your survival supplies, especially if you live in a cold climate.
A few warnings:
  • Grills should always be used outdoors and a safe distance from your home or shelter. The carbon monoxide can be deadly and a few stray sparks is all it takes to start a fire. Same goes for camp stoves.
  • If you use a fireplace, make sure the flue is open and unobstructed. Don't use treated wood for a cooking fire.
  • Never use gasoline to get a fire going.
  • Make sure fires are controlled with metal or rocks surrounding them.
  • Never leave a fire (not even a candle) without an adult to keep an eye on it.
Happy cooking!

Off-Grid Way To Wash Clothes

This thought came to my mind the other day when I ran out of coffee and almost threw the can away.

The lid fits tight on these plastic canisters. It is big enough to be able to put underwear, socks, and other small items in. Put them in and add hot water and very little soap. Shake it up for a few minutes and then pour out into a sink or into a Salad Spinner .One of those helps a lot with getting the water out of the clothing after you have drained the water out of the clothes. After you get done washing your unmentionables you can then hang them on a Folding Clothes Drying Rack for them to dry. Great way to wash clothes while camping also.

Homemade Ornaments

This is a great thing for the kiddos. Easy and it smells good.

Mix together an equal amount of cinnamon and applesauce. Start with just 1 cup each and keep adding cinnamon until you have a good, stiff dough. You can then roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick and then use Christmas cookie cutters to make cute and aromatic Christmas ornaments. Don't forget to put a small hole in them for the hanger.

Let them dry for several days on a cookie sheet or a wire cooling rack.

Getting Prepped For Flu Season ( or any other disease, virus, ebola)

Just got a package of some supplies for getting prepped for cold and flu season. Or any other type of virus, etc.

Today , we got some goggles and a box of 20 respirator face mask.

I also had gotten some gloves the other day. Some of those Nitrile gloves and then some thicker gauntlet style to put on over them. A pretty good start on the flu & cold survival kit. I also have stocked up on a bunch of different medicines , cough drops, tylenol, pepto, and any thing else that I could think of. Each week I have been buying and focusing on one thing medical wise. Now have a pretty good stockpile. Should last the whole cold season.

Surviving Ebola - Prepping For Lockdown: How to Prepare and Survive in the Event of an Ebola Epidemic.

Surviving Ebola - Prepping For Lockdown: How to Prepare and Survive in the Event of an Ebola Epidemic. was a free kindle book when this post was written.

If an Ebola epidemic broke out near your home, would you and your family be prepared?

It seems as though just a few months ago, Ebola was a small threat to just a few countries half way around the world. The mere thought of Ebola coming to the western world seemed highly unlikely. Fast forward to current times and everyone’s worst fears have surfaced – Ebola is here, and we need to be prepared.

While an Ebola epidemic is unlikely to happen in the western world, it shouldn't be written off as a non-threat. In the event that this deadly virus does reach the borders of your neighborhood, you’ll have very little time – if any at all – to prepare for lock down.

In this “Surviving Ebola” guide, you’ll learn…

  • The deadly reality surrounding Ebola

  • How to protect you and your family against an Ebola infection

  • How to beat the virus if you’ve been infected

  • What supplies you’ll need to survive an Ebola epidemic

  • When to go into Ebola “lockdown mode”

  • How to prepare your home for an Ebola epidemic

  • How to create an Ebola isolation room within your home

  • ...and other information to help you prepare for an Ebola epidemic

Within this guide, “Surviving Ebola: Prepping for Lockdown”, you’ll be armed with a complete guide to preparing and surviving an Ebola epidemic in the event an outbreak occurs. Learn from the experts on what to expect and how to plan and prepare for one of the deadliest viruses known to man.

Purify Water By Distillation

Distillation is an extremely effective way to purify water. It is a process of boiling the water and then catching the water vapor as it condenses. It is very effective at removing all types of pathogens. Bacteria, Protozoa, and viruses. It also can do an excellent job at removing chemical contaminants.

The number one disadvantage of using distillation to purify water is that it takes a long time. It could take up to 6 hours to get one gallon of water. Which would use a lot of fuel. Maybe not a good idea during a disaster , when you might not have any electricity. There is always going to be plenty of wood to make an open fire to boil water.

Here is one way to do it without electricity:

  1. Open fire, propane or gas stove.
  2. Stainless Steel Boiler
  3. Reflux column
  4. Cold Water for the condenser
For distilling water, you do not need packing.
Here is the distillation process:
  1. First fill the boiler with water. This can be the dirtiest of waters, rain or even county water.
  2. Attach the column/tower to the boiler with whatever size clamp or connector to make sure you have a complete seal.
  3. Hook water hoses to the condenser.
  4. Place the distiller on top of the fire.
  5. Bring the water to a boiling point.
  6. As the steam enters up the tower/column it will go through the condenser and is converted into distilled drinkable water that comes out of this into a bowl or glass jug.

Sew A Flu Face Mask

Protect your whole family by making them all their own flu face mask.

Homemade Ketchup and BBQ Sauce

Healthy Homemade Crock Pot Ketchup/BBQ Sauce (NO PROCESSED WHITE SUGAR)

This recipe is absolutely delicious and tastes even better than processed Ketchup.
I emptied a bottle of ketchup, used a funnel to fill a bottle with my ketchup, then used the balance in the crock pot to make healthy BBQ sauce.

NEED:

1 (28 oz) can organic tomato puree (I try to by Eden brand for canned - it is BPA free)
2 small cans organic tomato paste
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (use good quality such as Braggs)
3 tablespoons raw, organic honey
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
sea salt to taste
fresh ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

Place all ingredients into medium sized crock pot. Stir well. Cover and turn on high for 2 - 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove the lid and puree with an immersion blender, or use a food processor to blend until smooth. Cook in crock pot for another ½ hour or so, until thick in consistency.
Cool and transfer to storage container, leaving about 1 - 1 ½ cups in the crock pot.

Healthy Homemade BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

Remaining ketchup in crock pot (1 - 1 ½ cups)
1 can organic tomato paste
1 cup organic apple cider or apple juice
2 tablespoons organic molasses
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon raw, organic honey
1 tablespoon maple syrup
2 tablespoons, dry yellow mustard
¼ teaspoon cayenne papper
Ground black pepper to taste
1 tablespoon chili powder

Instructions

Place all ingredients in crock pot, stir well. Cover and cook on high for about 1 hour. Stir well, adjust taste as needed. Cook for another ½ to 1 hour with lid off until sauce thickens.
Pour into storage container. The best BBQ Sauce you have ever had and it is all healthy!

Rabbit In The Crockpot

Braised rabbit New Brunswick stew, one of the most well known and most celebrated dinner items, is easy to prepare and full of flavor. Slow cooking the tender meat from a rabbit is probably the best way to bring about the natural flavors and aromas of this dish, and combined with very carefully selected, complimentary ingredients, this dish is one of the healthiest and most delicious entree.

NEED:

1 sm Rabbit; (1 to 2 lb.)
1/2 ts Basil;chopped
1/2 ts Chervil; chopped
1/2 ts Lemon thyme; chopped
Salt and pepper; to taste
2 tb Butter; clarified
1 Red onion; pared, halved
 1 Carrot; chopped
 1 Celery rib;chopped
2 Red potatoes; cut in quarter
1 qt chicken stock
4 oz Lima beans

Preparing the braised rabbit New Brunswick stew:
Remove the hind legs and thigh bones from the rabbit. This makes rabbit meat pieces the perfect size for simmering and to fit into the slow cooker. Combine herbs by sprinkling generously over rabbit meat and season folds with salt and pepper.
Trim off belly and front legs, place pieces around buttered onions, carrots and other vegetable ingredients. Rabbit loin, potatoes, stock and lima beans sit on top of other ingredients, to ensure slow cooking process cooks smaller pieces uniformly on top of larger ones, with precise timing. Set it on medium heat for 6-9 hours, or until ingredients form thick, gravy-like consistency. Slow cooker will simmer ingredients together, and rabbit meat's rich flavors and intense aromas will infuse with the rest of vegetable ingredients and spices to result in a perfect combination. Slow cooking rabbit meat also maximizes texture and tenderness for the best possible flavor.
To serve braised rabbit New Brunswick stew:
Remove any leftover bones from rabbit loin, reserving warm meat at the bottom of each bowl. Arrange celery, carrots and thigh pieces on platter, arranging potatoes and other ingredients left in the cooker between rows of meat.
Pour warm stock over all ingredients; serve steaming hot with fresh corn bread.
