Purify Water By Distillation

Distillation is an extremely effective way to purify water. It is a process of boiling the water and then catching the water vapor as it condenses. It is very effective at removing all types of pathogens. Bacteria, Protozoa, and viruses. It also can do an excellent job at removing chemical contaminants.

The number one disadvantage of using distillation to purify water is that it takes a long time. It could take up to 6 hours to get one gallon of water. Which would use a lot of fuel. Maybe not a good idea during a disaster , when you might not have any electricity. There is always going to be plenty of wood to make an open fire to boil water.

Here is one way to do it without electricity:

  1. Open fire, propane or gas stove.
  2. Stainless Steel Boiler
  3. Reflux column
  4. Cold Water for the condenser
For distilling water, you do not need packing.
Here is the distillation process:
  1. First fill the boiler with water. This can be the dirtiest of waters, rain or even county water.
  2. Attach the column/tower to the boiler with whatever size clamp or connector to make sure you have a complete seal.
  3. Hook water hoses to the condenser.
  4. Place the distiller on top of the fire.
  5. Bring the water to a boiling point.
  6. As the steam enters up the tower/column it will go through the condenser and is converted into distilled drinkable water that comes out of this into a bowl or glass jug.
