99 Bags Of Beans On The Wall....

Well not quite, but 22 bags of beans have been added to my stockpile. I took our 25 pound bag of baby Navy beans that I got from Honeyville and bagged them into 1 pound bags ( some are a little bit over) using my FoodSaver V2040 Vacuum-Packaging Systemand have them now stored away for when we want to use them. I have been storing up canned hams and TVP ham. So this is a pretty good idea for storing foods. Beans are very good for you. It did not really take me too long to do this. I still have a 20 pound bag of 15 bean mix that I am wanting to do this with also. Maybe sometime in the next week.

Getting Ready To Home School

I have been actually teaching our little one ever since he was born, but this year I have REALLY gotten serious about it. Been buying school books, writing paper, flash cards, chalk board, etc. Everything that a 4 year old should have to be home schooled. His birthday falls to late to be put into the Kindergarten here. Which I am really glad about. I planned on home schooling him even when I was pregnant with him. I home schooled his older brother and sister, and they are doing great. My daughter graduates college this year and my son graduates high school this year. So I must have done something ok. You just have to know that every child learns in a different manner. My daughter had to be shown, but my son had to listen and hear the stuff. My little one now has taken to number very quickly - counting , adding , subtracting like crazy, but he is having trouble with letters and writing. Not sure why. Trying to figure it out so that he can learn them better. He knows his ABC's , but has not taken to letters like he did numbers. Maybe he will grow up to own a bank. LOL Just takes time to home school. It is not easy, it is truly a a labor of love.
It does not have to cost a lot of money either. There are many low-cost courses online for assistance, but if your more traditional, you can use the library". You can find other home schooling families in your area and share items. I have also gotten a lot of home schooling books at thrift stores. It can be a low cost thing to home school, if you use your head.

Cooking With Stockpile!! Frugal Meal Idea!!

I made my favorite meal last night for dinner! I call it my own hash! I take a half pound of ground beef, slice some potatoes, add onion - put it all into a frying pan and let it cook until beef is done and potatoes are tender. Sometimes I have sour cream that I add to it. Sometimes I even add cream cheese if I have it. It is really cheap , simple , and yummy. I have made it for years. I have a can of TVP beef that I am going to use the next time to see how good it is with that. Shouldn't be too bad.

Someone is Stealing Our Tomatoes...

I had noticed a week ago that we had a bunch of cherry tomatoes on our plants out by the shed and was getting excited about that. Dreaming about what I can do with all of them and how good they would be. I noticed the past couple of days that there have been fewer and fewer tomatoes on the plants and none on the ground. So I figured that someone is stealing them!! Found out last night that I am right , someone is stealing them!! DEER!! Son came home late from swimming at a friends and there was a momma and baby deer up there just snacking away on our tomatoes. So, first off - I am not crazy. I knew that the tomatoes were disappearing. Second - what do I do about it??? I have other tomatoes plants up in front of the house that are not being touched as far as I can tell. My husband says to let them eat the ones out by the shed because maybe sooner or later with the way things are going in America , that we might be needing them for meat!! I guess he is right about that. Better stock up on some deer slugs.

My Zucchini Took Over The Garden!!

The zucchini has taken over the garden. It wiped out the green beans, brussel sprouts, and peppers! :( All that is growing good is the baby corn, tomatoes, and that darn zucchini!! LOL

It is very pretty though.

Cooking With Stockpile!! Fast & Frugal Pull Aparts!!

The last 3 weeks I have not really been able to get to the grocery store! I have went and bought some water a week or 2 ago because it was on sale and we all got sick from the heat! So it has been a great time for me to try new things from just our food storage. This morning we all wanted something gooey and cinnamon to go with our coffee. So I pulled out a can of biscuits, some margarine, and the cinnamon sugar mixture that I get from Dollar Tree!

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

Open your can of biscuits, I just use the cheap cans of 10 from Savalot, cut each one into fourths, dip each one into some melted margarine, roll them in the cinnamon sugar, and drop them into a liberally greased bread loaf pan! Just drop them in anyway. It will bake all up and you put the delicious mess out on a plate and you all just fight over pulling them apart and eating them!!!

Trying to Keep Cool!

We have been having awful heat here in Southern Indiana. Heat indexes of 110 PLUS! It was 123 last week. Just unbearable. I have been trying to do anything early in the morning and then keeping as much off as possible. There have been some power surges and a few of our lights have blown. So I try to just keep the bare minimum on. The AC!! We cleaned the central air thing over the weekend and changed the filter. Trying to make it work better! It hardly shuts off. I have it set at 74 and it is stuck at 76 just will not cool down in here at all. I made myself a sun bonnet ( prairie style ) for when I do have to go outside to do anything in the yard, like pick veggies, take out the trash, get the mail. This has just been a miserable summer after having had a miserable winter. Poor little one has not been able to play out and it is just awful. Hope that we get some relief soon.

Baby Corn Is So Cute & Tasty!!

Our little one picked out most of the veggies that were going to be grown in our small garden and he wanted baby corn. Well, this morning I noticed them having silks on them!! Me and him went out and picked what was on there and He ate some of them raw!! Great little garden and I am so glad to see that my son has a green thumb so early. At 4 years old he can grow anything. Our poor little garden is in soil that is mostly rock and he was able to grow veggies.

Our Garden Is Producing!

We are finally getting some veggies out of our garden. YAY!! I pulled 3 Zuchinni off this morning and there are bunches of tomatoes on the plants that I will probably be able to pick this weekend. I like them to vine ripen. The baby corn is getting close. I wish the green peppers and Brussel Sprouts would have grown. Also the heat , I guess, got to the finger cucumbers! I am not sure how well the green beans are going to do. That Zuchinni kind of took over that part of the garden and the green beans are stunted and slow growing now. Every little bit helps though. Cannot wait to make some Zuchinni bread and fried Zuchinni. Yummo.

Jailed For Gardening

Jailed For Gardening This is a scary story.

This HEAT!!

This heat is so excessive. We now have a heat index of 117 degrees. WOW! In Indiana!! That is just nuts and so unsafe. Yesterday it was about 110 degrees and our little one got sick just from going to the grocery store. That little bit of time and he was sick. We came home and he had a fever and fell asleep. I have been giving him cool baths and he now is feeling a bit better. He asked to watch cartoons. So I can just imagine how sick someone would get if they were out in this oppressive heat for longer amount of time. Scary thought. Our AC is not working too good , it is being over worked. Plus we have been having power surges off and on the past couple of days that has blown out a couple of light bulbs. I am now just keeping the bare minimum on. No lights, TV is off, Had salad for dinner, and am about to shut this off so then the only thing that will be on will be the AC and fridge. See if that will work. Tomorrow will be just as hot if not hotter.

Everyone please keep cool, do not let your kids outside, keep your pets cool , and PLEASE do not let anyone sit in a car!! Keep safe and cool. Stay inside and read, play games, work puzzles, talk, draw, color ( like me and my little one have been!) , and stay cool!!!!

Not Too Much Longer...

I should have a computer soon. I am saving for a netbook that is only about 200.00!!! I am thinking that in about 3 weeks I will have the savings for one. I hope. Than I will be able to get back to writing and working. Using my son's computer is ok for checking emails and stuff, but I can't really sit in his room for too long and do stuff on here . LOL Oh well soon.
