Dry Milk
I have used dry milk for years. It is great for cooking with and making shakes. Substitute it for whole milk and it is a lot healthier. Has less fat and is cheaper. Can save you a lot of money.
Here are some tips for making it more tasty for your family:
1. Mix it up in a blender at high speed.
2. You can add a drop of vanilla to each quart.
3. Use it to make healthy shakes. Any type of shake mix can be added to it. My son uses it for his protein shakes that he drinks before he works out.
Using dry milk is something that you should try. Great way to be able to stockpile milk in you food storage and a great way to save money in your everyday cooking.

Steel Cut Oats Vs Rolled Oats
Steel Cut Oats vs Rolled Oats
There are several things to consider when choosing oats to make
your oatmeal with. While rolled oats are certainly the most popular type
sold today, there are advantages to steel cut oats that many people
don't know about.
Steel cut oats, or Irish oats as they're often called, are made when the groats are cut into smaller pieces. That's it. There is no other process. Unlike the rolled variety, which are further processed, these oats look similar to rice and have a more grainy texture when cooked. They are also more chewy and have a nuttier flavor. Some people, however, prefer the mushy taste of rolled oats instead.
Steel cut oats are definitely the best choice for consumers who are more health conscious. They contain no additives and nothing artificial and are usually sold either in tin cans or boxes. They are 100% whole grain, high in fiber, and very nutritious. A popular brand that is sold in the United States is McCann's Irish Oatmeal.
One of the advantages of steel cut oats is they have to be cooked longer than the rolled brands. This can make them very inconvenient for those of us who are often in a hurry in the morning and need a quick breakfast. While regular oats can be prepared in just a few extra minutes, steel cuts oats often take thirty minutes or longer to fully cook.
On the other hand, they are more flavorful than the rolled oats. The reason being that the process steaming and rolling oats takes some of the taste out of them. So it is a tradeoff between quality and flavor versus convenience. Depending on how seriously you take breakfast, sticking with the old fashioned Quaker brand may be a better solution. Really, it is a matter of personal choice.
If you look at the back of a box of steel cut oats and compare it to a brand of rolled oats such as Quakers, you'll find that the nutritional labels on each is virtually identical. So while there are a few health advantages to the Irish oats, the overall difference between the two types is negligible. You should simply choose the one that you like best. If you enjoy a chewy oatmeal, then Irish oats are a great choice. If you're used to rolled oats and don't want to change, then that is fine also. You aren't missing much.

Tornado Survival Tips
It is generally considered common knowledge that being underground is the best bet you can make when a tornado strikes, but what happens when you don't have a tornado or cellar available, and what do you do once you're in your safe area? If you live in a tornado prone area, it is very important to know what you should do when you hear a warning siren. Read on for some simple things that you can do to make it much more likely that you will survive if a tornado strikes.
Find The Right Shelter
The best place to be during a tornado is a basement or cellar. If you don't have a basement, go to an interior room of your home like a bathroom or hallway. Stay away from any windows, and if all you have is a bathroom get in the tub. Try to stay underneath a solid structure, like a staircase or large table. If nothing like this is available, pull a mattress over your head. Falling and flying debris can be a danger during a tornado, so coverage over your head and around you is ideal. Cover yourself with heavy blankets and sleeping bags for added protection.
Never stay in a car or mobile home during a tornado. The wind will make your car a very dangerous place, and mobile homes do not offer the protection of a home with a foundation. If you are caught outdoors in a tornado and can't find anywhere safe to get inside, try laying in a ditch or other low lying patch of land. The point is getting out of the path of wind and flying debris, so get as low as possible. Cover the back of your head with your arms and keep your face pointed down. Follow any official drill procedures if you are in a public area, since the primary objective will be getting you to the safest place in the area.
What To Have
Once you have decide where the safe area of your house is located, it is important to make sure there are a few necessities available if you and your family are there when a tornado strikes. Always make sure your safe area has a first aid kit and three gallons of water per person available in case part of the area collapses and you get stuck there for awhile. A radio and a charged cell phone are good things to have, as well as a flashlight and batteries for everything that needs them.
What Not To Do
Several myths about tornado safety are wrong and may get you killed if a tornado actually strikes. Never park and hide under an overpass during a tornado. The opening can act as a wind tunnel, making it more dangerous than the surrounding land. Never light any candles in your safe area while you wait for a possible tornado. If the disaster hits your home, your gas lines may rupture and ignite the flame. Don't waste time opening windows when a tornado is approaching. A tornado will break windows when it hits, and you don't want to be standing in front of them when it happens.

4 tsp. cream of tartar
4 Tbsp. sugar
Measure ingredients in a bowl, mix well, and store in a food safe, large canister. I also add an oxygen absorber into the container with the mix. Better safe than sorry.
To make the biscuits, measure 2 cups of mix into a bowl. Cut in 6 tablespoons butter, margarine, or shortening until crumbly. Stir in 1 cup milk (or buttermilk for fluffier biscuits). Turn onto floured board and knead for half a minute. Do not overwork the dough. Pat into a ½-inch-thick circle and cut with biscuit cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 450° F for 15 to 20 minutes or until puffed and golden. This makes about one dozen biscuits. Stock up on this basic biscuit mix. It will be used a lot.
This makes a nice old-fashioned “baking powder” type biscuit. It is a lot like the store-bought biscuit mix and can be used in its place in any recipe. This version has no shortening and has an indefinite shelf life.

Rain Barrels: Free Water For Your Lawn and Garden
Save money and water this year by installing a rain barrel. A rain barrel collects storm water from your roof, and stores it for later use on your lawn or garden. This is a great way to reduce storm water run-off from your property, while at the same time providing you with a free source of water for your lawn or garden without burdening your well, or increasing your water bill.
During the summer, watering your lawn and garden can account for nearly half of your household water usage. During dry spells this can place a great burden on your well. If you are on public water, the thought of reducing your water bill in half can certainly be very appealing. On an environmental level, it makes much more sense to water your lawn and garden with rain water, rather than using expensive highly treated water intended for drinking. You would never think of watering your lawn with bottled water! Using public drinking water for this purpose really doesn't make much more sense.
A rain barrel in its simplest form is a plastic 55-gallon drum connected to your gutter downspout, with an attachment for a garden hose at its base. Rain barrels can be constructed fairly simply and inexpensively using common items found at a hardware store. A search of the internet will reveal a variety of plans that you can follow.
Many companies and hardware stores now offer readymade rain barrels in a variety of designs. While these readymade designs will be more expensive than building your own, you will have the advantage of choosing a design that fits with your property, and that is appealing to the eye in addition to providing functional value. Also, check with your local town hall for a less expensive alternative. Many towns and civic groups offer programs that enable you to purchase a readymade rain barrel at a reduced price, while also supporting this organization.
