Hunt for savings at the grocery store!

When you go to the grocery store next time hunt for the savings. I am always finding deals and items marked down. The other day I found a bunch of produce marked down to .40 cents a bunch. Just because it had a bad spot. Nothing wrong with them. I have celery in the dehydrator right now that I got. I have had it in there for a few hours now and it just dehydrates to nothing. But, i love it for soups. Only thing wrong with it was the bunch had been cut in half when they opened the case. Look out for bread, meat, and more to be marked down.

The Bug Out Bag Book - Create a Personalized Emergency Gear Kit

The Bug Out Bag Book - Create a Personalized Emergency Gear Kit was a free kindle book when this post was written.

Disasters happen everywhere, and can strike without notice. Don’t wait until you have to act to get your supplies together. Give it some thought now, take precautions, and build a kit.

The Bug Out Bag Book is a guide to help you build a personalized disaster gear kit. The thing about a crisis is that it happens without notice. Though surprised, you won’t have to worry about little details, because you’ll have emergency gear ready to go.

This book is a short, practical guide, so you can read it and get started building your gear kit right away. If you don’t think you need to prepare at all, look at what’s happened the past few years.

The quake and radiation leaks in Japan.

Tornadoes that ripped towns apart in Missouri, Alabama, and Arkansas.

Chile and Haiti being rocked by devastating earthquakes.

What about war and large-scale riots? I could go on, but I don’t have to. This stuff happens. I’m not trying to scare you... I’m just trying to show you it’s important to think about it and prepare some supplies.

You lock your house or apartment when you leave, right? You lock your car at the store? You keep track of kids and elderly when out in a crowded amusement park or zoo, right? When you need to, you take a moment to pay attention and be prepared. Building an emergency gear kit should be no different.

How to Keep Your Home Safe - 131 Great Ideas for Keeping Your House Safe

How to Keep Your Home Safe - 131 Great Ideas for Keeping Your House Safe was a free kindle book at the time of this post.

Your house is a lot more than wood and plaster. It’s your family’s retreat from the world. You’ve worked hard to make your house a home. And there’s more to do. It’s time to get the facts on how to keep your family safe at home.

This guide will provide you with dozens of essential tips on home safety for you and your family.

This book covers the following areas:

    * Flooring and Stairs

    * Preventing Accidents in the Home

    * Keeping the Home Safe for Children

    * Preventing Fires

    * Electrical and Storm Safety

    * Handling Insecticides

    * Guarding Against Burglars and Intruders

Here's just a small sample of the tips included:

Keep baking powder on hand for extinguishing a kitchen fire in an emergency.

Don't put hot tea, coffee, or other hot liquids on a table cloth that hangs way over the side of the table. Someone could trip on the cloth and spill the scalding liquid.

Keep the gas cooktop away from open windows where curtains could blow into the flames or where wind could extinguish the cooking flames.
When handing a knife to someone else, always hold the point turned away from the other person.

Keep the handles of pots and frying pans turned inward on the kitchen range so that they cannot be knocked or tipped over by accident.

This is especially important if there are young children in the household.
Check all your child's toys to be sure any eyes, noses, knobs, or other parts will not come off when pulled or chewed.

Never leave a small child unattended in the bathtub.

In the bathtub! face your child toward the hot water faucet so he won't accidentally bump into the hot metal.

Don't hold a child on your lap while you drink or pass a hot beverage, or while you smoke.

Tie a bell around all bottles and containers that hold poisonous materials in the house to alert you to your child getting into something dangerous.
Store all your poisonous materials on high shelves, out of the reach of children. And remember to label the containers.

Some poison control centers supply stickers to put on dangerous chemicals so that a child understands tha t they are harmful. Ask if these are available in your locality.

It's best never to place pillows in an infant's crib and. to keep the crib completely away from the cord of a Venetian blind.

Never place a plastic bag or thin plastic covering within reach of an infant or small child, or near the child's bed.

Don't run extension cords under the rugs.

The cords wear easily and may short out, causing a fire.

Keep combustibles away from the furnace, which can give off flames or sparks at times.

For basic protection at minimum expense, locate one smoke detector in the hallway near each separate sleeping area. (More complete protection calls for a detector on every level of a home.

Don't mount a smoke detector in areas where the alarm can be triggered inappropriately such as by smoke from cooking, steam from the shower, or in the garage where combustion products from the car's engine can set it off.

Remember that smoke detectors are unreliable below 40° F.
Some fire departments supply stickers that can be placed in a window to alert firefighters to the presence of a child or an elderly or handicapped person. Inquire if such stickers are available in your locality.

If you live or work in a high-rise building, locate the fire exits on your floor. If an alarm sounds, remember that you should always use the fire stairs, not the elevator.

Learn to distinguish the sound of a fire alarm in your building from the sound of an elevator alarm bell. If you think someone' s trapped in the elevator when, in fact, the building is starting to go up in flames, you could be in serious trouble.

I Survived!: 5 Bible Characters Who Survived Disasters

I Survived!: 5 Bible Characters Who Survived Disasters was a free kindle book when this post was written.

Unfair circumstances can shake our lives and even our faith. The situations themselves are hard enough to deal with, but then we wonder why God allowed them. If he’s in control, why are our lives such a mess? This study looks at the lives of Jeremiah, Jonah, Joseph, Paul and Job and how they survived their personal disasters. It challenges you to think through the “why?” questions and see God in a fresh way. You’ll take another look at failure and refine your definition of it. You’ll catch a glimpse of the invisible when you view ordinary events from God’s perspective. Thinking through these issues can give you fresh purpose in life, hope for the future, and a roadmap to moving past unfairness. This Bible study is designed to be a companion book to Edges of Truth: The Mary Weaver Story, the true story of an innocent woman accused of murdering a baby she cared for. It helps to answer the questions that Mary’s story raises. This 10-week study is designed for group Bible studies or personal reflection. Each chapter gives 5 daily readings from the Bible with comments and questions that can be used as personal devotions.

    Darn Those Darn Socks!

My family is so hard on socks. I used to have to buy new socks at least once a month. That was getting ridiculous, so I had to learn a new skill. I had to learn how to darn them so that they could be worn for a bit longer. Now our socks last longer and I am not buying socks every time I go to a store that sells socks. It might seem like it is time consuming, but it really isn't. I get all of the socks together, put on a movie and darn away!! Before I know it I am done.

Here are a couple of videos that I had watched to learn how to do it:

    Unclog A Toilet!

Had a long night and morning. Our toilet was clogged up! Started last night at about 6 pm and I finally got it unclogged this morning at about 10 am. Whew.

I started out just using the plunger and that was doing NOTHING! So , I got onto google and found a easy way to unclog a toilet , but it still took all night and finally got unclogged this morning.

HOW TO UNCLOG WITHOUT A PLUNGER:

Bring a big pot of water to a boil.

Take it to the toilet and put some dish soap into the toilet, then pour the water into the toilet. This should work the soap down into the pipes and "move" the clog.

It took me about 12 pots of water total to get it unclogged, but it did work. Even after the first pour , the water was slowly going down. Finally this morning I poured a pot of boiling water in and it made a funny noise, Little Man said it sounded like a burp, and down it went. Flushed it to make sure and now it is working great again. Like it should.

I am so glad that I got this done without hubby here and without having to call a plumber!!

"A very chilling story that keeps you glued to the pages. I thought the author's writing was reminiscent of some of Isaac Asimov's early writings so I felt compelled to see the story through to the end. I really enjoyed this story and hope to read further works by this author."
    Book 1 rating 5/5 Stars

This is a boxset of three best selling Post-Apocalyptic books:

In the near future, society has reached its breaking point. Even in the U.S. (the last best hope for the world), economic collapse seems unavoidable along with war and civil strife. In such troubling times there are those prepared for the worst and those who are not. Then there are also are too young to notice what is happening around them. Brian is an average teenager just starting high school in a Pittsburgh suburb he moved to only three years before. Struggling to fit in at school and dealing with his mother--who continues to make wild plans to flee the country--all Brian wants to do is get through another day. But on one seemingly normal Wednesday afternoon at school, the collapse begins, creating a new and dangerous world. Through these unexplained events, Brian will discover that the craziest day of his life is only the beginning...of the end.

    Book 2:

In this second installment of the three-part story, trouble has come to an unsuspecting Pittsburgh suburb. In the near future, society has reached its breaking point. A strange and mysterious occurrence follows one seemingly normal Wednesday afternoon that leads to chaos and pandemonium. All power in the town has gone out, vehicles have stopped dead in their tracks, and cell phones aren't functional. Could this be a freak accident or some part of a larger attack on the nation's power grids? Alice, a strong-willed mother of two, races to get her children from school before things get worse. Brian, her son, has fled the high school with his friend, Tobias, as they attempt to get home. And Kiya, her daughter, is trapped in her middle school as the vigilant Principal, Mr. Wright, has sealed the school from outside intruders. Through all of this, the citizens of the town can stand together or they can fall, as a full-fledged collapse is right around the corner.  This is...the end.

    Book 3

In this third and final installment of the series, the people of a Pittsburgh suburb must come to grip with their troubling dilemma. Cut off from the world through a collapsed power grid, there are no easy answers, and as chaos grows people start to turn on one another when they should be coming together. But nothing will stop Alice from finding her children and getting them to safety, despite the odds.  Her daughter, Kiya, is trapped inside a middle school that's been placed on lockdown by a fanatical principal who fears the end of days. Her son,Brian, wants nothing more than to find his friend Tobias. And finally, Jeremy, a loner from town, has traveled far to escape the calamity, but finds that the problem extends far beyond state lines. All of their tales merge into a discovery of where society is headed. Could there be hope? Or is this simply...the end?

Always Find Cool Stuff At Thrift Stores

Went to Goodwill today to look for some fabric and found these neat playing cards tied together for fifty cents. They are vintage from 1973. But , the real cool thing is that one deck is edible flowers and the other one is poisonous plants. Perfect size for keeping in bug-out bag. Be good for playing with my son and he will learn good and bad flowers! I didn't find any fabric, but these were worth the trip.

    Homeschool Minute - Animal Tracks

We have been having fun with the animal tracks in the snow around our house. We followed some deer tracks until they got into the quarry the other day. A lot of fun. So, I decided to set up animal tracks learning at the kitchen table today. He did some matchups with animal track cards and used finger paint with some of his toy animals and mad tracks on paper. He had fun learning how tracks were made and how many different types there are. We watched some videos on youtube about them and identifying them. I even learned a lot.

5 Tips on How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

I woke up to frozen pipes this morning in my kitchen. Luckily , the sun came up and it worked it self out on its own. The winter season can be long and dreary enough. The last thing you need is the stress and expense of hiring a plumber to deal with frozen pipes.

Before the cold strikes, it is best to get your pipes ready for winter. Here are five easy tips on how to prevent frozen pipes:

    1. Insulate Pipes

One of the most basic things that can be done to prevent your pipes from freezing is to put some insulation on them even before the cold season comes. You can use either of these two methods to insulate your pipes:
Heat Tape. Using heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables on your pipes is one of the most effective ways to protect your pipes from the freezing cold. Heat tape actually resembles an extension cord more than a tape. Wind the tape in a spiral pattern around the pipes, closely observing the manufacturer's installation and operating instructions. Some heat tapes are best used with additional insulation.
Fiberglass or Foam Jackets. Insulation by itself is also a good way of keeping your pipes from freezing. You may use fiberglass insulation or polyethylene foam jackets. Keep in mind that the more insulation used, the better protection your pipes will have.

    2. Use a Heat Lamp

Heat from a light bulb can also help prevent frozen pipes. A 100-watt bulb should be able to do the job. Attach the bulb to an extension cord and hang it by your pipes. This is especially effective if most of your pipes are located in one enclosed area.

    3. Prevent Cold Winter Drafts

Seal all openings in your crawl spaces and windows to keep the frigid air out and the heat in. Air leaks may also be found around electrical wiring or dryer vents. Any cracks in the house's foundations should be caulked as well.

    4. Allow Heat to Circulate

When winter does come, it is important to create heat circulation. You can easily do this by keeping closet doors open to allow the heat to get to pipes located under the sinks or on the other side of the walls.

    5. Keep the Faucets Dripping

Sometimes, a steady small trickle of water is all it takes to prevent frozen pipes. The continuous movement of water can keep them from freezing. Let the water drip continuously throughout the night preferably from a faucet connected to a wall outside.

With these tips on how to prevent frozen pipes, you won't have to worry about an expensive plumbing emergency due to a burst pipe ever again.

    Sewing To Save Money

Yes, I am already sewing for spring and summer! I have cabin fever and tons of fabric. I am starting with some tshirts for my Little Man. I have enough fabric to make him , maybe, 10 in different patterns. He is going to need all new shorts also. He has gotten so tall. With what I spent on " fabric " and the patterns, I would have him all new clothes for spring and most of summer for about $10.00! That is a great savings!

I get all of my fabric from thrift stores. Repurpose sheets etc. I love those " tshirt" fabric sheets! I can make so much out of those. $1.50 a sheet! Vintage sheets with the cool prints make great skirts.

I get most of my patterns from thrift stores. You can find some great ones. Usually about 50 cents a piece or box lots for a couple of dollars.

I taught myself how to sew on a singer sewing machine that I got at a flea market for $25.00. I still am using it. Ten years later.

Sewing can be a real way to save money.
