Beef Jerky All Over The House!

What does a 17 year old do on a weekend when he has no plans and all of his friends are sick and can't do anything??
They spend the whole weekend making beef jerky, of course!

First he got a few pounds of beef that was already cut into thin strips for stir fry and was on markdown. Got it all for about $6.00 with tax and all. Then he got some new marinade. One that he had used before - a mesquite. Then he got another one that sounded good (and turned out to be VERY good!) -a teriyaki!

He got everything ready and soaking in marinade and then filled up the food dehydrator. 4 trays of the beef jerky!! Turned it on and went back to writing. He checked it every once in a while and moved it around and stuff. When it was done he found a glass jar that I had saved from a jar of beans and put it all in there.

He has gotten quite good at making beef jerky. I love watching him do stuff like that. It makes me proud to be his mom.

Will Be A Busy Weekend!!!

Finally got my new foot pedal for my sewing machine and will be sewing a ton!! I have not been able to sew in months. I had to save up coupon money to be able to buy this new foot pedal, but it will be worth it. I will be sewing Little Ones summer wardrobe to save money. Little One's shorts are so easy to make. Plus I have some stuff that I want to sew up and use my stash up to try and make some extra money. Just am so happy to have the sewing machine back and have the sewing bug again!!!

I also have to walk to the store tomorrow. That will be fun!! It is supposed to be sunny and about 50 degrees so I won't freeze, but it is just the idea that I have to do it tomorrow because it is supposed to rain all next week and I won't have any other chance. My Fibromyalgia is flaring up and I can hardly move so it will be hard to get up and go tomorrow. But I have too.

It will just be a busy weekend.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING THIS WEEKEND TO GET PREPARED??

A Year Supply Of Food!!

What do you do this year with your tax check?? If you are me - You get a year supply of food storage from Nitro-Pak!! This is something that me and my husband had talked about since December. We had been wondering what to do with his tax check. We know that we need a vehicle , eventually, but right now - since he is a truck driver and we live in a very small town where everything is within walking distance. We thought , for us , it was better to get a food storage for our family. We still have a bit of savings to put towards a car. So, soon we will have this year supply of food to put back. I have been working on other stockpiling and everything else is coming together. God will provide us with a vehicle when the time is right.

Be Prepared For An Earthquake

4 Person Standard Survival Kit

The best way to be prepared is to get a earthquake survival kit together. Teach your children what to do in case of an earthquake and have a plan in place for what to do if there is one.

The first part of your earthquake safety disaster plan should include everything you can do ahead of time --

• Secure breakables in your home
• Develop a disaster plan
• Develop an evacuation plan - and set a meeting location
• Make a plan for pets and animals
• Review your home for structural weaknesses
• Set aside water and food reserves
• Keep extra prescriptions and eyeglasses available

During an earthquake -

• During an earthquake protect yourself and small children
• Stay positioned - don't move around until after the earthquake stops

After an earthquake -

• Check for injuries among family members
• Check for structural damage to the home
• When safe, put your safety disaster plan into action

It's important to have the details worked out in advance of when a disaster hits. After a disaster, some people may panic and having a list of what to do in an orderly fashion helps to calm people down. When your world has just been shaken, often, the best thing to do is begin checking off the things you need to do: return to some form of normalcy.

Remember that during an earthquake you can be cut off from emergency services, water, fuel, food, banks and other retail outlets for an extended period. Be prepared!

A New Week Of Prepping

So far this week is starting out great. I woke up to strawberries done in the dehydrator and have them vacuum sealed. I actually found a new foot pedal for my vintage sewing machine!!! Hopefully it will be here by weekend. I have stack of sewing that I want to do! It has been stacked up for a few months. Not a good winter , not being able to sew to pass the time away.
The car that we had been using off and on of my daughters finally died for good. I do not even feel bad about it. I will just walk every where. Like I did anyway. I did not like driving her car. Just felt odd to have to borrow a car from my daughter. So now I have to save for us a vehicle. Hope to find another van or a truck for a low price.
I am going to try and keep from posting anymore doom and gloom news stories on here. LOL. I just want everyone to know so that they will get prepared also.
I hope that everyone else has a great week and gets there butts in gear on their prepping!! Get your gardens planned, food stored, and anything else that might be needed in your household if the SHTF!!

Be Self-Sufficient By Starting A Home Based Business

A great way to become more self-sufficient is to start your own home based business. There are tons of things that can be done out of your home to make extra money. Just take a skill that you already have and go with it. Do you sew, craft, garden, etc. - the ideas are endless. You can even get your kids in on it. My teen son is going to start mowing lawns this summer to make some extra money for hiself. I have been sewing and getting ready for the craft fair and yard sale season. Just think about what you are already good at doing and see how you can do it to get paid for doing it.

Just got done watching this and now am even more worried than ever. I had already thought some of this stuff , but to see it set out and explained like this , really makes you think even more about what is going on in the world. Makes me wonder what is going on in Egypt and why it is going on. We all need to be very diligent in getting our households in order and prepared. This is very important.

Six Reasons to Start Seeds Indoors

Whether you've grown a vegetable garden for years, or are just starting out, there are many good reasons to start your seeds indoors (instead of buying plants). It's not as hard as you might think. Here are eight great reasons to try it this year:

It Saves You Money
This is always a great motivator, but even more so these days when most people are feeling the crunch. The cost of a packet of seeds is generally in the ballpark range of the cost of one plant. If you go the packet of seeds route, you'll get a dozen or two (or even more) plants for the same amount of money investment. The savings is significant.

It Opens Up Your Options
Last year I grew two different kinds of luffa (yes, the sponge, which you can also eat), and an out-of-the-ordinary variety of cucumbers. None of this would have been possible if I wouldn't have started my own seeds. Buying packets of seeds to start on your own allows you an almost endless variety. Although you might be able to find an occasional exotic plant start, most growers stick to the known best sellers, so your options are more limited.

You Create a Longer Growing Season
Some vegetables need a very long growing season-longer than you might naturally have where you live. Starting your plants indoors allows you to get a jump-start on the season by growing them in a protected environment for a few weeks before you transfer them outside.

Your Plants are Tougher
Since growers get paid better if they grow plants fast, they often create conditions that promote fast plant growth. However, these conditions aren't necessarily the best for the plants. Because they (the growers) are good at what they do, they can create a near perfect environment to grow plants, but it also makes them weaker than the ones you can grow at home in more imperfect conditions.

You know that old saying, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger", right? This holds true with starting seeds indoors as well. Chances are, your house temperature isn't set at a constant, steady level 24/7, you may forget to water your plants one day, or over-water them the next. In the end, you will have stronger plants because of these less-than-perfect plant growing variables.

You Get to Choose the Ingredients
If you want organic plants, you know for sure you've got them if you start them from home and control their environment. You get to pick the soil, the additives, the kinds of seeds you use, etc. Most of these options are taken away from you if you buy plants from the store.

You Can Use Your Own Seeds
If you saved seeds from your garden last year, you can use them to start your garden this year. This gives you even more control over and knowledge about what you're planting and where it came from. Not only that, it also saves you more money.

Dehydrating Blueberries & Strawberries

I had heard that doing blueberries was almost impossible to do in the dehydrator, but I got a small bunch on sale and tried them. I read online somewhere that if you pop them with a pin , or I used a toothpick, than you would have a better chance of them turning out. So I popped them all and put them in the dehydrator with 4 trays of sliced strawberries. The next morning I woke up and the strawberries were done and perfect. The blueberries took about 4 more hours. They turned out great. I am loving this. I cannot wait until this summer! I will have a garden and get to go to the Farmer's market and get stuff that I am not going to grow myself. This food dehydrator is probably the most useful item that I have ever bought. I love it.

I Had To Turn Off The News!!!

Every time I turn on the news it is just more bad news. I already know that this world is going to hell in a hand-basket, so I have decided to turn off the news for the weekend. I just cannot watch anymore of what is going on in Egypt, hear anymore about how bad things are here in the USA, the bad weather, and more. Plus, it did not help that the Newscaster on my Roku added LIVE Al Jazeera Television that was just streaming LIVE from Egypt!! I am only going to watch the Super Bowl!!

Anyone else feel the same way about watching the news???

MREs

I think that MREs are good! There I said it. I like MREs. Not sure why, maybe from being a little girl and family in the service always having them and us camping. Just great times. There are some really good MREs out there. I do not like the spaghetti or chili though. My favorite is the Chicken Fajita! Put it on the tortillas and yummo!! I would not just stock up on MREs , but they are a great backup plan and something to keep on hand for an emergency. I have a case of them on hand. We did have 8 cases , but our teenaged son got into them and ate some!! Took them with him and his buddies when they went fishing and camping. Now we have just 1 case left. Emergency Essentials has a great selection of MREs. Not too bad on the pricing either. So, you might check them out and get some just to keep on hand. You never know. They would be a great thing to keep in your vehicle or your bug out bag.

Water Filters And Water Purifiers For Survival

At the top of everyone's survival and preparedness checklist is drinking water. Pure, refreshing, sweet water. We want it to be clean and free from dangerous bacterias, cysts, and viruses. That is because without water to drink we are dead in just a few days. That is not all though...without clean water, we risk both sickness and death!

You can store water for emergencies...and you should. But what happens if you don't store enough or you have to evacuate your home? How many days worth of water do you think you can carry with you if you are on foot? We each need about 1 gallon of water a day...do you think you can carry 2-3 days worth?

Suppose you don't have to evacuate but the crisis lasts longer than you are prepared for. What are you going to do?

There are several solutions to these problems, but the one that makes the most sense to many people is to invest in either water filters or water purifiers.

Both types of devices come in small portable bottles that are ideal for someone on the move, and larger units designed to take care of an entire household.

Many people don't know the difference between a water filter and a water purifier though. Both use a filter or series of filters to decontaminate the water. They both remove protozoa, bacteria and parasites from the water. They both make water much safer to drink. The difference is that water purifiers also remove viruses from the water.

Removing bacteria is important because even clear water can have salmonella, E. coli and cholera. These bacteria not only cause illness, they kill people that drink contaminated water every year. Both kinds of devices are good at removing them.

The water purifier will also remove dangerous viruses from the water such as the Hepatitis A virus, Rotaviruses, and Norwalk-type viruses. Not usually fatal, these viruses can definitely make your life miserable for a while though.

You can also kill viruses by boiling the water, using iodine tablets, and adding chlorine tablets.

Each of these methods has disadvantages to consider. Boiling water uses fuel that can be used for cooking and is time intensive. Some people are allergic to iodine and it leaves a strong taste in the water. Chlorine tablets take 4 hours after you have added them before you can drink the water.

No matter what, the first step that you should take when disinfecting or purifying water should be to select the cleanest and clearest water that you can find. The clearer the better, because particulates in the water such as clay and silt will reduce the effectiveness of your filters and also make your chemical disinfectants less reliable.

When choosing your water from a still source such as a pond you should take it from the top because you will find less particulates in the water there. The only reason that would cause you not to remove the water from the top would be if it has oil or some other surface contaminate in it. Water that is removed from the top also has the advantage of being disinfected somewhat by the sun's radiation.

The important thing is that you invest in one or more of these lifesaving gadgets. Get a large home model and a smaller portable bottle if you can. You may never need one to save your life, but you will be thankful that you have one if you get caught in a crisis.

Hi, I'm James Sorick and I run a website that teaches about survival gear and preparedness strategies. I invite you to visit my site where I go into greater detail about the water purification bottle and many other topics including the basics of survival food.Simple: Just Add Water - Outdoor Gourmet Meals - WiseFoodStorage.com
