Long Shelf Life Food Options

Many people purchase long-shelf-life food for convenience, so that they'll always have staples on hand, to save money by buying in bulk those foods that won't spoil, and to build up a long term food supply as part of their emergency preparedness plan. Whatever your personal motivation for looking into long-lasting foods, there are many from which to choose.

Whole grains, from wheat berries to rolled oats to barley, store exceptionally well in airtight containers in a cool, dry location. These grains can last for years and even decades in food-grade plastic storage buckets, especially if oxygen absorption packets are slipped in just prior to sealing the lid. Grains for more immediate use may simply be poured into food canisters on the counter or in the pantry.
Beans and legumes, in their dry state, are a very long-shelf-life food group as well. Some choices include black beans, white beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, lentils, garbanzo beans and split peas. Again, these are very stable and simply need a storage container in a cool, dry place inaccessible to pests and where they are not threatened by moisture.
Dried fruit, such as raisins and banana chips and prunes, last much longer then their fresh counterparts and when properly rotated can be an integral part of a long term food storage pantry.
Beef jerky is one of the most appealing ways to preserve and store meat without refrigeration or a freezer. Properly made, beef jerky can last for years in a cool, dry storage pantry.
Freeze-dried foods, which range from whole entrees and meals such as pasta primavera and beef stew to single ingredients like chicken meat, green beans, cheese and powdered eggs, last for 25 years in their cans or pouches stored properly.
Canned foods, including tuna, soups, beans, sauces, vegetables and meals, typically have several years' shelf life from the time of manufacture.
Dry goods, especially pasta, are typically fairly long shelf life foods as well.

Check expiration dates when purchasing foods and set up a system whereby newest foods are placed in the back and older ones moved to the front of the line or top of the stack on your food storage shelves. You should store foods you eat all the time, and rotate individual items, using and replacing them so that nothing goes to waste.

With a well-planned, properly organized long term food storage system, you can both save money and prepare for a possible crisis in which you would need to rely on your stores for survival.

As you build your larder, make sure you know about long term food storage pitfalls to avoid. Find this and related articles on author Maria T. Miller's Survival Food List blog.

Food Storage Recipe - Kids Love This

I made this on Saturday. I had nothing that the kids wanted for lunch and since it was just me and them here I threw this together real quick and they loved it. Now, I used a jar of Ragu cheddar sauce and noodles for this, but you can use any macaroni and cheese box. Velveeta shells and cheese would be real good. I have a case of this Ragu stuff because my hubby delivers it in his truck all of the time. I have an over abundance of all Ragu products. LOL

Half a bag of noodles

1 jar of of Ragu Cheddar sauce

1 can of Armour Vienna Bites

Cook the noodles , stir in the cheese sauce and Bites. it is done. Serve to your kids. This is a great lunch in a pinch and it is very frugal. Plus, kids love it.

I just found this site and have loved looking thru it. Some great tips and ideas.

Duck Tape - A MUST HAVE!

Everyone has got to have some Duck Tape in their house. There are so many different types of it that you will have some for every need.
I was given the chance to try out a couple of types of Duck Tape over the weekend and I have to say that I was surprised at how well it worked. Most of the reason I was kind of leery about it was because it was clear and zebra print. HMMMM. But, wait a minute, it was AWESOME!
I tried the Duck EZ Start Premium Packaging Tape w/ Dispenser first , just for the reason that I actually had some items to package up for shipping. I really loved how easy it was to start it and the dispenser was very easy to use and felt good in my hand as I was using it. It was not too bulky to hole onto and use. I have definitely found the packing tape to use and it will be among all of my office supplies from now on.

Duck EZ Start Premium Packaging Tape was also as easy to use and the one thing that I noticed about both of them is that they did not tear at all. Most packing tapes I have used tear down the middle and are hard then to start back up on the roll. Usually wasting most of the tape trying to use it again. But, with this tape, I did not have any problems. I even let my 5 year old use the Duck EZ Start Premium Packaging Tape w/ Dispenser to repair a book and he had no problem with it at all. I had a problem getting it back from him though. he was wanting to go around the house fixing all kinds of "broken things".

Now , Zebra Printed Duck Tape was something that I knew was going to be fun to use. It is Zebra print. How could it not be fun to use. But did it work as good as other Duck Tape??? YES!!! It is actually easy to tear and I did not have to fight with it. My daughter is going to make a wallet with what is left of it. I guess, she has seen people take the printed Duck Tape and make all kinds of stuff out of it. Even Prom dresses. So, this will be something that I will be buying more of. In other prints , too. I was thinking of making a bag to keep some survival gear in and put in the car. Be great way to keep it in there and it would be protected by the sturdy Duck Tape. I will have to see. But, I am planning on it.

I really loved all of this Duck Tape that I tried out. I do not have anything bad to say about any of it. It felt good to use it and I know that my packages that I mailed out will make it in once piece. The printed one was great to use. It was fun and I know it has the best quality as any other Duck Tape product. You have got to get a lot of Duck Tape in your house. You never know when something might happen and Duck Tape could be a life-saver. There are so many things that can be done with Duck Tape.

Food Storage Recipe - Chicken & Noodle Casserole

This is so good. I made it tonight and please pardon the photo, I am having to use my camera now because my camera quit working.
The casserole dish is licked clean when I make this. I think that it is like a chicken pot pie without the pie.

Chicken & Noodle Casserole

1 can of cream of mushroom soup ( always have tons of canned "cream of" soups on hand. You can make a ton of things with them!)

1/2 cup of milk

1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese

1 cup frozen mixed vegetables

2 cups of cubed cooked chicken ( another great recipe that you can use canned chicken in )

2 cups of cooked and drained noodles

1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese

Stir the soup, milk, pepper, paresan, veggies, chicken, and noodles in a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish.

Bake for about 25 minutes at 400 degrees. Stir it up and top with the cheddar cheese. Serve.

Meals In Jars - Just add water

Chef Tess Bakeresse: 52 jar method

What a great idea. Make up the meals in jars and they have a great shelf life and then are simple to cook. Just ass water. Love it. I will be making up a bunch of these. That way they are already together with what I need now and then in an emergency I do not have to hunt down all of the ingredients.
