Traveler's diarrhea can be a nightmare. What's worse, drinking contaminated water can give you much more than a case of the runs. Giardia, amoebic dysentery, cholera - these are just a few examples of water borne illnesses that could really ruin your trip. There are a number of options for treating your water, but here are four of the most effective methods.
Boiling
Boiling water for a sufficient amount of time will effectively kill all harmful organisms. You should boil the water for at least three minutes if you are at sea level. At 5,000 feet above sea level, you should boil the water for at least five minutes. For every 1,000 feet above that, boil for another minute.
Iodine
Iodine is a chemical agent that treats water by neutralizing harmful organisms. It needs to be kept in a dark container and cannot be exposed to light. While this option is preferred by many because only a few drops are required for treatment, there is a distinct odor and taste caused by the iodine and some people find it offensive. Iodine can be purchased in liquid form from most camping and recreation stores.
Chlorine
Chlorine is a chemical agent, like iodine, which kills harmful parasites and bacteria. It takes longer to work than iodine, often up to four hours. However, chlorine treatment does not cause an offensive odor or taste. Chlorine can be purchased in tablet form from many camping and recreation stores. You can also order it online from companies like Amazon.com.
UV Light
UV light is another effective way of neutralizing harmful organisms. The UV light destroys the DNA of the organism and thus they can not reproduce, making them safe to consume. There are many companies that provide a UV treatment device, but SteriPen is the most well known and they have a positive reputation. UV light treatment is an attractive option because it takes approximately one minute to purify sixteen ounces of water, and there is no odor or aftertaste associated with the treatment.
While these are all effective treatment options, it is important to note that for them to be effective you need to first filter your water. This will remove larger organisms and harmful chemical and materials. A filter can be purchased from a camping or recreation store or online at Amazon.com. If you do not have a filter, you can use cheesecloth or a coffee filter instead. Whichever option you choose for treatment, make sure you follow the instructions closely. Don't let a preventable illness ruin your trip!

Tornado Safety In Our Home...
All of the tornadoes that have been happening have me freaked out. I live in Southern Indiana where there are a lot of tornadoes and I survived the 1974 outbreak in Madison , IN inside a basement with my mom and a few other kids and moms. The upper house caved in on us and luckily we all were under the stairs. They had to dig for a couple of hours to get us out. So that made an awful impression on me at 3 years old. I have been scared of even the word tornado ever since. You just mention it around me and I start to look at the sky and shake.
Well, to make matters worse we live in a house right on the western edge of town, on a hill, and with no basement!!!!!!!! It is like we have a bulls-eye painted on the side of our house. So, we can't get in our tub, it is on our western wall and has glass walls all around it. so I had to come up with something else. And fast , too, we have another round of severe storms going through tonight that could produce tornadoes. A HIGH risk. So I looked at our house and thought about the next thing closets. The best one is in our toddlers bed room. So I completely cleaned it out yesterday. I could not believe what all was in there and even found my Alas, Babylon book!! I stuffed a few pillows in there some blankets, bottled water, flashlights, a radio, and some stuffed animals and hopefully now we have a safe or at least safer place to ride out a storm.

7 Foil Cooking Recipes
We do not plan on going camping soon, but I wanted to share this article because you can do this at home. Do it right in your back yard and it keeps your house cooler and your power bills lower. Plus it is fun!!!
Somehow food tastes much better outdoors. Maybe it's the crisp and fresh air. Maybe my appetite is bigger. Maybe it's being able to eat without being interrupted by the phone!
The only drawback to camping cooking is preparing and cleaning up. I don't like cooking multi-step recipes or scrubbing smoke-stained dishes in less than adequate dishpans after the meal when I can be watching the sunset.
That is why my favorite cooking 'pot' is aluminum foil.
Foil cooking allows you to prepare delicous meals in the coals of your campfire and have nothing to wash when dinner is over! Below are 7 of my favorite foil wrap recipes. But first let's go over the basics of tin foil cooking:
Use heavy-duty foil so you don't burn the food and so the packet doesn't tear.
Use assembly-line technique, not one foil packet at a time. E
Put some butter in the packet so your food won't stick to the packet.
Sprinkle seasonings generously. It makes others think you are a pro at this.
Double-seal by folding twice to keep the moisture in.
When you fold leave air room for heat circulation inside.
Don't cook foil packets over roaring fire. A small fire or white hot coals is better.
Tip: For first night, prepare the foil packets at home. When you get to camp, just toss them on the coals.
Here are 7 foil packet recipes: Note: depending on how hot the coals are, it takes generally 20-30 minutes, less for fish or pre-cooked items. Turn every 5 minutes.
Recipe 1. Ham & Sweet Potato
- 1 slice of pre-cooked ham (this can be fresh or canned)
- 1 serving canned yams (about 3 pieces)
- 1 or 2 canned pineapple rings
- 1 to 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon butter
Recipe 2. Chicken Potato Packets
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
- 4 medium red potatoes, cut in 1/2-inch cubes
- 2 cups frozen green peas
- 1 jar (12 oz.) chicken gravy
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
Recipe 3. Baby back pork ribs
- 3 pounds baby back pork ribs
- 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons pepper
- ½ cup water
- 1 ½ cups barbecue sauce
Or just purchase a packet of ready-to-heat Lloyds Barbecue Ribs
Recipe 4. Tuscan Sword Fish
- 1 can (15 oz.) Great Northern or cannellini beans, rinsed, drained
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- 2 tablespoons prepared pesto, divided
- 2 swordfish steaks (4 to 6 oz. each)
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon pepper
- 2 lemon slices
Recipe 5. Shrimp Jambalaya Packets
- 1 pound peeled and de-veined medium uncooked shrimp
- 4 cups cooked rice
- ½ pound smoked sausage, sliced
- 1 can (14 1/2 oz.) diced tomatoes with garlic and onions
- 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
- 3 to 4 teaspoons dried Cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
Recipe 6 Mexican Pork Packets
- 4 boneless pork chops, about 1/2-inch thick
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 cup medium chunky salsa
- 1 can (15 1/4 oz.) whole kernel corn, drained OR 1 package (10 oz.) frozen whole kernel corn
- ½ cup chopped green bell pepper
Recipe 7 Cranberry Apple Sweet Potatoes
- 4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch slices
- 2 Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples, cored, thinly sliced in rings
- ½ cup dried cranberries
- 3 tablespoons margarine or butter, melted
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Have fun foil cooking. Open the foil carefully to avoid a burst of hot steam .

6 Fun Ideas to Keep Cool on a Hot Day
The heat of the Summer sun does strange things to people, who'll often go to great lengths just to feel refreshed. Having a cold shower and sitting inside your house in the cooling air conditioning aside, here's 6 fun ideas to keep cool on a blistering Summer's day:
Swimming. The number one past time to while away a Summer's day. Little can beat a day at a water park if you've got one near you. Or you might be lucky enough to live within walking distance to a public pool, or even luckier enough to have a pool at your house. If so, why not gather some friends together and make a day of it? There are few people who'll refuse the opportunity to have a refreshing dip in a pool on a hot day.
Water fight. We're all children at heart, but it might take the adults in your neighbourhood a bit of convincing before they agree to this one. Water pistols and water balloons are the obvious weapons of choice here, but really anything can be employed such as ice-cream containers, hoses and buckets. There are little rules to a water fight, it's sort of a soggy guerrilla warfare. Encourage passers-by and your community to join in, you may start a street-wide battle. Of course, if you're in an area where water shortage is a problem, this is obviously a terrible idea.
Picnic in a park. Find a shaded area in a forested section of your favourite park and settle down on a rug with a good book or good friends. Eat cold foods and drink and you'll soon be comfortable and calm. It's amazing how effective sitting in the shade is for cooling off.
Frozen treats. Keep your children healthy by keeping them away from ice cream. Frozen ice blocks made of juice or cordial are a delicious Summer treat for children and adults alike. Pour liquid into a glass or cup and cover with tinfoil. push a spoon (or ice cream stick if you have them) through the foil and pop into the freezer. These will obviously need to be made the night before, but are well worth the wait and will keep for weeks.
Ice-skating. Rinks need to be kept at a constant cool temperature, so if you're looking for respite from the heat, this is the place to go. Be aware though that there is often session times you'll have to wait for and going from the freezing rink back into the oppressive heat can be a little disappointing.
Get out and get inside. Heading to an indoor shopping centre is a very effective way of keeping cool. Any indoor space is bound to have a constant cool temperature thanks to air conditioning. Alternatively, you could head to the movies, where you'll sit in comfort in the cool air and not have to think about the heat outside for a few hours.
Keeping cool quickly becomes the most important part of your day sometimes, but it can also be the funnest. Think of the Summer sun as an excuse to have fun and you'll soon be popping with ideas of your own.

Keep Cool With A Water Mister
I bought one of there a couple of years ago and it works great. My little one always wants to be outside , but because he is so young , someone HAS to be out there with him ! He keeps cool by playing in his small pool. I needed something to keep me cool, so I tried one of these and love it. It really works. Blows the cool water on me and really keeps me cooled off. When you have nothing else this can be a life saver. I also wear a sun hat.

Keeping Cool With No A/C ( or Power )
I am always looking for ways to save money on bills ! Our heating bills were more than usual this year because of the major cold we had. So I have been looking for ways to save money on cooling cost and ways to not use the air conditioner as much. I found these free patterns or Tutorials online to make these awesome neck cooling bands. They are so easy and really do work. I remember when I was little and we sat in the heat all day at the Madison Regatta and someone had let us kids use theirs and it really cooled us off. You can buy yourself some , but I am all about saving money so I suggest you make your own. I know that you have some fabric laying around that is just begging to be sewn into something useful!!

YARD SALES!!!!
My daughter woke me up on Saturday and wanted me to go to yard sales with her. Even though I had only 3 hours of sleep , I got up to go with her and am glad that I did. These were the first ones that I had been to this season. It was pretty productive and VERY low prices compared to last year. Last year every yard sale I went to was priced like the owners thought the stuff was made of solid gold.
I got a tent for $2.00!! Which we are going to use this vacation to stay close to home and camp at the state park that is about 10 miles from our house. I am not sure what happened to our other tent that we had , but now we have a good one that is for 6 people. I also got a ton of fabric!! More sewing!!! Yippee!!! I got my little one some Tonka tractors and trucks. I got some clothes and a few books. Over all it was a really good time with my daughter and a good day!!
Oh I almost forgot , I got a really neat Pyrex dish that is inside a brass thing that has a lid! Under it is a holder for a candle. Really cool. I tried it out that night and put a can of pork and beans in it. Lit the candle and within a few minutes I had warm beans. GREAT!!

My Small & Humble Garden
It is a real small garden - about 3 feet by 10 feet is all that I have space for. But me and my little one got it all cleaned out and turned over. Than we planted our seeds. He picked out Green Pepper, Cherry Tomatoes, Brussel Spouts, Zuchinni, Baby Corn, and Green Beans!! I think that for being 4 years old , he picked some great veggies to grow in our small garden!! I need to go and get some stakes and tomato cages so that when it all starts to grow we will be ready. Last year all that we planted there was tomatoes and green peppers. The tomatoes took over and we had thousands of cherry tomatoes!! My little one had just thrown the whole package of seeds. LOL This time I actually planned and only put in a few seeds. I think that it should produce good. I have some ideas for doing a couple of raised gardens out behind the shed that I want to work on this weekend. It is not supposed to rain too much. That is why I am so late getting this garden ready. Everytime I would plan on working and getting it done, A huge storm would blow in!! I also have strawberries inside in a huge pot and another huge pot that has Baby Cucumbers!! I can't wait until it all is grown and we are eating it all!!!!!!

Car Trouble
We had finally went a got a newer car 2 weeks ago and today we woke up and it would not start. Come to find out it had a bad battery in it. Luckily I had a battery here that was for our generator and it fit right in and started right up. But, how in the heck does a car lot sell a car with a bad battery in it. The positive post was broke off and the juice was leaking out. The positive thing was all corroded. Oh well. At least we had a battery. But what if we did not have one?? I guess we need to be prepared for any type of an emergency, not just food and home!! We also need to be prepared for car emergencies, also!!! I need to get one of those car kits , that have the jumper cables, flashlights, etc in them. I also want to have a bag with emergency stuff in it. Just something else to have to prepare for.
