Alternate Forms Of Heat

It got so cold here last night that it got me to thinking of other forms of heating that can be used. What if the power went out , what would we do for heat?? I do not want my family to freeze and I am sure that you do not either.

My number one choice for heat would have to be a wood burning stove! That is all that my family used when I was growing up. Even when my grandparents bought a new house , they put in a wood burning stove and did not even use the electric heater. I love the heat that is put out by wood burning stove. Some people might be scared of them, but they are not too bad. I was around them from birth until I was about 19 years old and I never got burned, and there were tons of time that I had to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire!! We are looking into getting us one now for heat. This is a great way to get off of the grid.

This is something that we have for backup heat and Love. A Kerosene Heater! The last house that we lived in this is all that we used. We HAD to use it or freeze and I have had all types of heat , grew up with wood burning stoves as only heat , and a kerosene heater comes into a close second to wood burning stoves. The only draw back that I can see about a kerosene heater is the fact that you might run out of fuel and it would be hard to keep a ton of it on hand.

This next alternate form of heating would be something that I would just keep on hand for an emergency and NOT for long term usage. Mr Heater . It is safe for indoor use and pretty low cost to buy and operate. It could be use for a short term emergency and keep you from freezing.

This next form of heating is one that all of you handymen or women can do. A Barrel Stove Kit. I seen one of these in Home Depot and thought that it was such a cool idea. Great way to get some heat into your house for a low cost.

Homemade Christmas Gift Idea!!

THIS WOULD MAKE A GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT!!

This is a great way to have a keepsake of your baby ! Make this clay and take an impression of your babies handprint and footprint. How cool is that? It is also pretty easy. I made on of these on my sons first birthday !

Here is the clay recipe:

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup cornstarch

1 tablespoon salt

3/4 cup water

In a medium sized saucepan ,mix all of the ingredients and heat on high until it comes to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and continue mixing until it becomes thick and creamy and is hard to stir. Remove from heat. Knead with your hands when cool. Flatten out the clay with a rolling pin and place your babies hand or foot firmly into the clay to make an imprint. Use a toothpick or pencil to write their name and dates ,like birthdate and date of imprint. You can even go as far as decorating this with some pretty glass stones or little toys etc etc. Let this harden for a few days! When you roll out the clay you can even use cookie cutters.

Is It Going To Be Enough Prepping?

I have just come to the realization that all of our prepping just might not be enough. It just might not last us as long as we want. I am starting to freak out a little bit and am seriously thinking of some way to get myself a part time job! That way I can take that whole check and buy preperations. Need more storable food, weapons, WATER, medical supplies, alternate energy , heating, cooking, and toiletries. Need to kick into gear and get all of this done quickly.

Food Storage Recipe - rice casserole

A friend of mine gave me this recipe about 22 years ago. I was newly single with a toddler and not much money and she was always giving me recipes that were low cost, healthy , and easy.

This one turned out to be one of my favorite and it is made with things that I always have on hand.

Rice Casserole ( that is always just what I called it)

1 can of chili beans ( DO NOT DRAIN !!)
some frozen broccoli ( I always get those small boxes of frozen chopped broccoli to use in this recipe and it is cheap!)
about a cup of instant rice
Velveeta cheese cut up into cubes ( I use the store brand cheese. I am too much of a tightwad to buy the Velveeta!)

Put all of this into a pyrex baking dish mixed well, cover with foil , and bake until the rice in tender.

That is it.

Easy and frugal!! LOVE IT!!

I did not have any instant rice last night so I had to cook up 1/2 a cup of rice to add to this.

Some Updates!

I figured out that my son's computer has a place for my Smart Media card from my camera! I can now take photos of stuff that I do and share it. Here is the photos of the day that I made homemade peanut butter. But for some reason the photos that I THOUGHT that I was taking of the whole process did not save or take or whatever.

Coffee From Dollar Tree! Frugal & Not Too Bad!

I am always on the hunt for frugal items and things to be able to put back in the stockpile for a low cost. I got this coffee at The Dollar Tree to try. We tried it yesterday and I thought that it was OK. I am the type that thinks that coffee is coffee. As long as I have creamer and sugar I am fine. My husband had to make a second pot for himself to make it stronger, but he did say that " if he was stuck in a foxhole this coffee would hit the spot". So I guess , since it a $1.00 for a 50 cup/serving bag than it would be good to buy and put back. We would have to have coffee if anything happened.
