Prepare For An Earthquake

Prepare for an Earthquake

The only solution then is to prepare for an earthquake. While you cannot prevent one, you and your family can be one of those who are more than ready if such a thing happens. Having an emergency plan of action for any kind of disaster, much less an earthquake is not only sound thinking, but when disaster hits, family members know exactly what to do.

Steps to Prepare

Each family must take steps to prepare for an earthquake or any other kind of natural disaster. It is important to be self-sufficient, in case emergency personnel are unable to get to your location. As the flight attendant tells you as you wait for take-off "put on your own oxygen mask first, so that you can help others." A family earthquake plan does just that.

Here are some of the things you can do to prepare for an earthquake or any other natural disaster.
• Develop a disaster plan for the family

• Ensure a cache of food supplies for the family for at least 3 days, more if possible

• Keep an emergency medical kit and other emergency items handy, stored in a safe location

• Keep extra prescriptions, eye glasses and other needed items in the emergency supplies

• Make plans for pets

• Shut-off the gas immediately after an earthquake, don't light a match first

While this list is certainly not comprehensive, it gives you some ideas of what you need to do in order to prepare.

It comes complete with checklists, government recommendations for food supplies, emergency goods and ideas on how to make your home more earthquake-secure.

Get Prepped

Get Prepped was a free Kindle book when this post was written.

It is said that 'Survival is an Art'. This book: "Get Prepped" by Jacob Nelson takes that art, frames it, and hangs it where anyone can view it and understand it. With the many world changes that seem to frequently occur, both natural and political, the need for an updated survival book is real. In this book you will find useful information on how to build not only a 72-hour kit, but the accompanying survival kit or bug-out bag. This book also includes the ingredients to make your own Thieves' oil. When it comes to preparation and ultimate survival, there is no other book that covers it as well as Get Prepped!

Common Terminology Used by Survivalists In Disaster Planning

Below are some basic terms that a person may come across when researching survival awareness and preparedness. Some of these words and others may appear from time to time in articles and other information sources commonly used by survival experts or self proclaimed 'preppers'.

Big One - see TEOTWAWKI. The "big one".

BOB - Bugout Bag. Used to store a supply of readily available supplies that you can grab at a moments notice if you need to leave your home in a hurry, as in right now!

Channelized Areas - In the case of an event where an entire city was to be evacuated, channelized areas are the most likely routes people would take; major roadways, railways, riverways, etc...

EMP - Electromagnetic Pulse. Capable of knocking out electronic equipment permanently.

Event - A catastrophe, big or small, that may require you to use some of the knowledge and supplies you have acquired through being a prepper. Green events last 1-10 days, yellow events last 10-90 days, and red events last 90 days to years in duration.

FEMA - Federal Emergency Management Agency. A Federal Government organization that responds to disasters. It usually takes FEMA a minimum of 72 hours to respond to a disaster emergency with the very basic of supplies (water and rations).

FIFO - First In First Out. A method of organizing perishable goods.

Golden Horde - The anticipated large horde of refugees and looters that will pour out of metropolitan regions when things like food, water, and civil order start to become non-existent.

G.O.O.D. - Get out of Dodge. Abbreviated slang term that describes the need to get out of town in a hurry.

GPS - Global positioning system.

Grid Down - An extended period of time when the power system is not available. (1989 Quebec power outage - small solar storm struck earth, lasted only 12 hours but knocked out power in the entire province of Quebec).

MRE - Meals Ready to Eat. U.S. military rations.

Prepper - A person who plans for the worse, but hopes for the best.

Retreat - A privately owned property where you can go in case your home becomes unsafe to reside within. A retreat in most cases is someplace away from large cities where you can find safety and survive on the basics such as hunting, foraging and farming.

TEOTWAWKI - The end of the world as we know it. Basically this is an event that spells the end of world society, including a large drop in the world's population and a massive loss of technical skills/knowledge. The entire world will never be the same as it was.

Survival Family Basics: The Beginner Prepper's Guide for When Disaster Strikes (Preppers Survival Handbook Series) was a free kindle book when this post was written.

Just to say Thank You for checking out this Book I want to give you a copy of my upcoming special report "The Prepper's Supplies Guide for When Disaster Strikes" Go to SurvivalFamilyBasics.com to reserve your FREE copy now.

Disasters often strike with little or no warning and can leave tremendous amount of destruction and ruin in their wake. Survivors, nevertheless; can get through even the toughest circumstances using the right information and tools. It lurks in the back of our minds, just beyond our ability to see it-the likelihood that a tear may open up in the life's fabric without any warning-devastating a skyscraper, house or an entire civilization.

Today, almost nine out of ten Americans live in places that are at a high risk of hurricanes, earthquakes, terrorism, tornadoes or other disasters. No one knows when we have to make split second choices for ourselves and our families. How will we react in these situations? What would it feel like? These are the questions that need to be answered in order to prepare ourselves well for an emergency situation.

In Survival Family Basics-The Beginner Prepper's Guide for When Disaster Strikes Macenzie Guiver provides a practical guide for how to prepare for and react in many of life's most unpredictable situations and scenarios.

She takes you into the austere regions of your nightmares and provides you with answers to those questions people are afraid to ask while offering hope, reassurance and encouragement. It is hard to even imagine a time when you have to make some split second decisions in life-decisions that many of us are afraid to make, but the truth is that at some point in life, many of us may be confronted with such situations that force us to make such decisions.

In addition to providing proven tips and strategies on how to smartly and quickly respond to disasters like earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and floods-how to stay protected from extreme weather and stay calm and composed during these situations, the book contains step by step advice on how to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.

From preparing your evacuation plan to the importance of prepping for a disaster, the book includes the crucial information that you need to know to live safely through the worst. It is aimed at helping you and your family plan for a variety of emergency situations, persevere during these times, and recover when it's over.

Black Out Curtains - A Must Have!!

This is a must have on my list of thing to have up in your home. Especially if your like me and will most likely be hunkering in if something happens. Blackout Window Curtain are a great thing to have up anyway, they don't let the hot sun in the windows in the summer and in the winter they act like a thick thermal barrier to keep cold air out.
I actually noticed our power bill go down last summer when I put ours up. Not running the AC as much. Great for us because we have no trees at all in our yard. So no shade to cool off the house. These have helped a ton. They also will come in handy during a disaster. No one can see in your house. They can't see if you are using lights, etc. Great tool to have.

When Technology Fails

When Technology Fails: A Manual for Self-Reliance, Sustainability, and Surviving the Long Emergency, 2nd Edition is my favorite book on this subject. It is super thick and stuffed full of anything and everything that you might need to know in a SHTF situation. Almost 500 pages of awesomeness! My hubby loves this book and even bought a second copy for him to keep in his rig. When he is on the road he will be prepared.

FROM THE PRODUCT PAGE:

There’s never been a better time to “be prepared.” Matthew Stein’s comprehensive primer on sustainable living skills—from food and water to shelter and energy to first-aid and crisis-management skills—prepares you to embark on the path toward sustainability. But unlike any other book, Stein not only shows you how to live “green” in seemingly stable times, but to live in the face of potential disasters, lasting days or years, coming in the form of social upheaval, economic meltdown, or environmental catastrophe.
When Technology Fails covers the gamut. You’ll learn how to start a fire and keep warm if you’ve been left temporarily homeless, as well as the basics of installing a renewable energy system for your home or business. You’ll learn how to find and sterilize water in the face of utility failure, as well as practical information for dealing with water-quality issues even when the public tap water is still flowing. You’ll learn alternative techniques for healing equally suited to an era of profit-driven malpractice as to situations of social calamity. Each chapter (a survey of the risks to the status quo; supplies and preparation for short- and long-term emergencies; emergency measures for survival; water; food; shelter; clothing; first aid, low-tech medicine, and healing; energy, heat, and power; metalworking; utensils and storage; low-tech chemistry; and engineering, machines, and materials) offers the same approach, describing skills for self-reliance in good times and bad.
Fully revised and expanded—the first edition was written pre-9/11 and pre-Katrina, when few Americans took the risk of social disruption seriously—When Technology Fails ends on a positive, proactive note with a new chapter on "Making the Shift to Sustainability," which offers practical suggestions for changing our world on personal, community and global levels.

EMP SURVIVAL

I have had this book, EMP Survival: :How to Prepare Now and Survive, When an Electromagnetic Pulse Destroys Our Power Grid, on my survival book shelf for a while now. I pull it out every so often to reread it. It is a great book that is full of some very simple ideas on what to do after an EMP happens.

From the Back Cover

An EMP attack might cost $20 billion and a lot of inconvenience or- it might cause significant mortality.
The power grid failure could be repaired in days or- it could take years.
It could happen today or- next decade.
While Congress hears testimony of our nuclear armed enemies with enhanced EMP weapons- our electric power grid is more vulnerable than ever.
Political leaders and scientists encouraged Americans to prepare for a long term power outage in Congressional testimony. They admit to doing so themselves.
This book describes our personal preparation, survival research and purchasing experience to prepare for an EMP attack.

About the Author

This book is based on our reading of survival preparation texts and congressional testimony of EMP-related hearings, combined with our experience and training.  We have had careers in electrical engineering, holistic nutrition and public health sanitation. The intent is to describe our preparation, research and purchasing experience so that readers can benefit from our effort. The EMP survivalist must have some expertise in areas of communication, medicine, first aid, wild foods, solar energy, and electronics.  We hope that readers will further research and enhance these plans and options for their situation.

What To Do If An EMP Takes Out The Electrical Power Grid

Whether you are a prepper or survivalist, preparing for an economic collapse, or merely a fan of the TV show "Doomsday Preppers" you have probably thought about a major power outage. An EMP attack, where a rogue nation or terrorist entity takes out the electrical power grid, is really one of the 'worst case scenarios' for our country, as we would be plunged into darkness, worse than the 19th century.

The reason it would be worse than the 19th century is because people back then were accustomed to a life without electricity; we are not. Not having electricity in your home is one thing, but if all of society lacked lighting, it would be utter chaos.

The first thing you would want to do is to stay home, as the streets would not be safe for a variety of reasons. If it was merely the power grid that failed, then streetlights and traffic signals would be out. If the EMP fried all electrical circuitry, then your vehicle wouldn't even start.

Either way, the safety of your home would be the best place to be. Hopefully you have had the foresight to put together a family emergency communications plan and anyone who was caught away from home knows exactly what to do.

The first thing you would want to do is immediately fill the bathtub and all available containers with water, since the tap will be dry as soon as the water towers are emptied.

The second thing you'd want to do is to ready your emergency lighting, and prepare blackout curtains for your windows so that all of the neighbors don't see how much light you have. The problem with being prepared is that it attracts the attention, and jealousy, of those who have chosen not to prepare.

Since the neighborhood will be very dark, any homes that have any lighting will be very obvious, and without blackout curtains someone could easily be spying in your window to see if they want to come and help themselves to your supplies.

The third thing to do after the power grid goes down is to make a plan for using up your perishable goods from your refrigerator and freezer. Cooking on a barbecue grill, either yours or a neighbors, may be your only option.

Rehearsing what to do if an EMP takes out the electrical power grid can be a fun way to spend a weekend, if you are committed to shutting off the electricity and really sticking with it. You don't have to be a prepper or a survivalist to appreciate the confidence that comes from having taken steps toward emergency preparedness.
