3 Things done out of 1 celery bunch!

WOW! I actually did 3 things with my bunch of celery.

First thing was , we took some of the stems and did a science experiment with them. Put them in different colors of food coloring. Teach the Little Man how water moves through plants. He can actually see the water go up into the plant.

Second thing that I did was take all of the celery and slice it up. Put it into my food dehydrator. More dehydrated celery to add to my jar for soups. Yummy.

The bottom I put into a small cup of water to get it to start. The one of the right I had done about a week ago and it is starting to grow. This Friday have to go and get some bags of potting soil and get some pots. One of these I am going to keep indoors to see how it does and if it can even be grown indoors. Just to see. I would really love to be able to grow a lot of items indoors in case something happens and going outdoors in not an option. We would still have the fresh veggies and herbs growing for us to eat.

Sore Throat? Cold? Try mint tea!

I always try and keep a pot of mint growing in the house. On my kitchen window sill now is a Herbs in a can  of mint. My son bought me it about 2 weeks ago and they are just sprouting. So cute. But, fresh mint is so good for making a tea with that helps with colds and flu. I add real honey to it and it really soothes a sore throat.

Easy to make:

Put a couple of sprigs of the mint into a teapot and pour in a couple of cups of boiling water. Cover it and let it infuse for a few minutes. Strain it and drink! Add the honey to it right before you drink it.

Also is good for indigestion, nausea, headaches.

If you have no fresh mint you can use dried. Use a teaspoonful per cup.

Bugging In: How to Hunker Down and Survive in an Emergency Situation (Stay Alive) was a free book for the kindle when this post was written.

Are you prepared to survive in a shelter-in-place emergency situation?
Well, are you? If you are, pat yourself on the back. You're a step ahead of most people. The average citizen turns a blind eye to disaster preparedness and is largely unprepared to handle all but the most minor of emergency situations.

Do you really want to take a chance that could cost you and your family your lives?

The first thing most victims say is, "I never thought it would happen to me." Don't be caught unprepared when an emergency strikes that forces you to take refuge in your own home. The time to get ready for a crisis situation is now. Wait until the last minute and you'll be forced to pay top dollar for food, water and supplies, if you can find them at all. If not, you'll be forced to scavenge for scraps or beg for help, along with hundreds of thousands of others who couldn't be bothered to prepare.

The following topics are covered in this helpful and easy to read book:

  • How to stay safe when you can't call the cops.
  • How stockpiling alcohol and tobacco might save your life.
  • Why you might not want to run a generator. HINT: There's a better option.

  • How to communicate when the phones stop working.
  • Appendix #1: A list of supplies you'll need.

Best 50 cents I ever spent!

Weekly trip to thrift store and all I spent was a whole 50 cents! But, what an awesome find! A wooden board that has times tables on little wooden squares. Turn them over for the answers! Little man loves it. Playing with it and learning. I bet there is some handy person out there that could make one of these for themselves.

Homeschool minute - words and spelling

Little man came up with this idea on his own. He takes his word list of the week and uses his letters that I've collected from all of his old games, magnets, etc. Works great for him. Put the word list down and then spell them out with the letters. He also writes them into his word notebook.

Food Storage Recipe - 3-2-1 Mug Cake

This is so easy. When my mom told me this recipe the other night on the phone , I seriously thought that she had lost her mind. But, I love finding ways to make things easy and with stuff that I have plenty of in my food storage. So, I gave it a try and now have a favorite dessert to make for us when we want something quick and just enough for one of us. We usually waste cakes when I make a whole one, I hate to admit. So to be able to make a single serve cake will also be a very frugal thing for us. No more wasting cake!!!

3-2-1 Mug Cake

NEED:

1 box Angel Food Cake Mix

1 box of any flavor cake mix ( We love funfetti cake mix in our house, but you could use any flavor!)

Frosting for when it is done cooking! YUMMY

Pour both boxes of cake mix into a big gallon sized Ziploc bag.

Shake it up and make sure that it is all mixed up very well.

NOW THE FUN PART:

Take a clean coffee mug that is microwave safe. Combine 3 tablespoons of the cake mix with 2 tablespoon of water. Stir this up well and put into the microwave for 1 minute. You do not even have to grease the mug.

Put a dab of frosting on top and eat it right out of the mug.
