Being Self-Sufficient & Prepared is More Important

I have been thinking a lot about getting self-sufficient and prepared. Thinking about what is important. Some things that I really thought was important are starting to be out on the back burner. If things happen like people say than having internet and tv is not going to be something that we will have or need anyway. There are other things that I am wondering about too. "Waking up" really makes you think differently about things and makes you realize a lot of stuff that you never thought of before. Things that I used to love to do just are not anything that I want to do now. I hardly get on Facebook anymore. Even though that is the only way that I can talk to any of my family. I love them all and they know that. I just do not have a lot of gumption to get online anymore. It just is not important anymore. Getting my family prepared and self-sufficient are what matter most. I love this blog and have had it since January of 2008! Wow! If I decide to cut the internet out I will only be able to get to the library once a week and will try to write on this then. Give updates. My oldest will graduate at the end of the month, so I have until then to decide. We have only kept the internet this long because of him needing it for school. A lot of his school work is done online. I will let you all know what happens. If you watch the news any , than you have been seeing an uptick of earthquakes and they seem to be getting bigger and bigger. Now is the time to get prepared.

4 Person Standard Survival Kit

The best way to be prepared is to get a earthquake survival kit together. Teach your children what to do in case of an earthquake and have a plan in place for what to do if there is one.

The first part of your earthquake safety disaster plan should include everything you can do ahead of time --

• Secure breakables in your home
• Develop a disaster plan
• Develop an evacuation plan - and set a meeting location
• Make a plan for pets and animals
• Review your home for structural weaknesses
• Set aside water and food reserves
• Keep extra prescriptions and eyeglasses available

During an earthquake -

• During an earthquake protect yourself and small children
• Stay positioned - don't move around until after the earthquake stops

After an earthquake -

• Check for injuries among family members
• Check for structural damage to the home
• When safe, put your safety disaster plan into action

It's important to have the details worked out in advance of when a disaster hits. After a disaster, some people may panic and having a list of what to do in an orderly fashion helps to calm people down. When your world has just been shaken, often, the best thing to do is begin checking off the things you need to do: return to some form of normalcy.

Remember that during an earthquake you can be cut off from emergency services, water, fuel, food, banks and other retail outlets for an extended period. Be prepared!
