What Prepping Will You Do This Weekend?

I am getting a bunch of stuff ready for the dehydrator. I have some strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. I need to get them done. I also am working on a place in the shed for the chickens. We still have 5 of them.
Another thing that I am wanting to get done today is print off all of my information , recipes, survival stuff , tips, sewing patterns, and some other stuff from my computer. I don't like it being only on the computer. What if something happens and we have no power?
We are supposed to have some really bad storms come through here on Monday, so I want to make sure all of the batteries are charged up for that.
Need to get to the store sometime this weekend, too. They have sugar on sale for $1.29 a 5 pound bag!!!! That is an amazing price. 5 bag limit so I will go in and then my hubby will. I use a lot of sugar.

What will you be doing to prep???

Finally! A Shelf For Some Of My Stockpile

I finally got a shelf for some of my stockpile. I am using it for stuff that gets used every day. I did have it all in boxes and I would have to dig stuff out everyday. I have such a small kitchen that I have no extra room for extra items, but this is going to work for now. I have other types of things on top of the shelf, like boxes of candles and stuff like that. Keeping it out of reach. I also have boxes of stuff on the bottom shelf. I need some more shelves though. Do not look at it too hard right now, though, it is not too organized. LOL It will be though. It is not seen in this photo , but I also have a 3 tier basket thing on wheels that I have full of bags of beans, packages of noodles, cookie mixes, potato mixes, etc.

A Camping Hammock

This is so neat! I want one of these so bad. Lawson Hammock Camping Tent would really come in handy if you are stuck out some where in the open. You could get up and out of sight, but be protected from the elements. Really nifty idea. This is something that every single one of us needs for our BUG OUT BAGS!! Keep a couple of them in the trunk of your car.

Take A Hot Shower Anytime & Anywhere!!

Taking a hot shower can really make a huge difference. Nothing better than a hot shower and if times get really bad taking one can really make you feel better. With this ingenuous item, the ZODI Outback Gear Hot Tap Travel Shower
, you can take a hot shower anytime. It holds enough water to heat up for you to take a 10 minute shower. Which would be great for me - I only take a 5 minute shower now anyway. I really think that everyone should have one of these. If you can keep clean than it will make the situation so much better and easier to deal with.

This is a great site from my bookmarks. I love the simple ideas and recipes.

Working On Being Self Sufficient

I worked on my goals yesterday. I made some more powdered eggs for my baking needs stockpile. 2 dozen of them. They are so easy to make and fun. If you do not have a food dehydrator - YOU HAVE GOT TO GET ONE!! I have done so much since I got ours.

I also now have 25 pounds of baby navy beans and 20 pounds of 16 bean soup beans!! Beans are a great way to get filled up and a great way to get protein. I am going to stock up on some canned hams this weekend.

Our stockpile is really growing. It did not take long and did not take a ton of money either. It can be done. All that you have to do is jump in and start doing it. Baby steps. I started with sale at my local store. They would have those 10 for $10.00 sales and if it was something that I knew we ate a lot of I would go and get it. You can do it.

Grow Your Own Vegetables in a Small Space!

Nothing beats fresh vegetables out of your own garden. The taste of a freshly picked tomato is pure heaven and digging your own new, red potatoes is so rewarding. But what do you do if you don't have a large yard or no yard at all? No problem! You can grow a vegetable garden in a container!

Many people think of container gardening as an easy way to grow beautiful flowers and accent patios and porches with color. But have you ever tried adding a few vegetables in with the flowers? Growing vegetables and herbs in containers is just as easy as growing flowers and you get delicious results! You can mix a cherry tomato plant in with a pot of marigolds and snapdragons. The bright red fruit is a beautiful addition to the colorful blooms. Put a couple of red potato starts in a large planter with a few flowers, the foliage of potato plants is very beautiful and you will also have a few tiny white flowers as well.

How about dedicating a few planters to just produce? Strawberries often produce more fruit when planted in a container because they don't have much room to spread. Strawberry plants spread by sending out runners that root down and start a new plant. Once the strawberries run out of room to send out shoots, they put all their energy into producing fruit. How delicious to have fresh strawberries just outside your door!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning a container garden.

Properly prepare your pot. Your pot will need good drainage so make sure it has drainage holes drilled in the bottom. If your pot does not have drainage holes, either drill holes or create a drainage area by adding a layer of gravel at the bottom. If you have a very large pot, you can create a drainage area and eliminate the need for large quantities of soil by adding a layer of Styrofoam at the bottom. This will also make the pot easier to move around. Just remember to add enough soil for the plants to have a good root system.

Don't use garden soil. The soil in your yard is generally too heavy for container use. A container gardening needs light soil that is rich in organic material for proper drainage. Mix regular potting soil with compost and peat moss to get a healthy soil that is perfect for containers. It is a good idea to mix in time release fertilizer while you are mixing the soil. Most time release fertilizers last about three months so plan to add more at that time.

When you are transplanting new plants, dig the hole about twice as large as the plants root ball. Then back fill the hole with some loose soil, this will give the tender roots soft soil to anchor in. Before you place the plant in the hole, massage the roots to break them up slightly. The plant roots have been confined to a small area while they are getting their start, however they need to break free and they need a little help from you to do that.

Give your plants a healthy start by using a root starting fertilizer as you are planting. Mix the liquid fertilizer with water and add it as you plant each new plant to your container. Root starting fertilizers contain the proper nutrients that help to prevent transplant shock.

Trim the plant after you plant it. This is a difficult thing for most gardeners to do. After all you just bought a beautiful, full plant at the store! You need to remember that the plant needs to put effort into building a strong root system. This is difficult if the plant is trying to maintain full blooms or large amounts of foliage as well. A good rule of thumb is to cut off the plant by two thirds. Don't worry, your plant will grow back fuller and healthier than before.

Combine plants with similar requirements. If a plant requires full sun, don't pair it up with a plant that does best in partial shade. Careful planning will yield the best results in container gardening.

Containers are a great way to have fresh produce all summer long. Growing your own fresh produce is rewarding and allows you to provide healthy food for your family. Give container gardening a try, you will love the results!

Stockpile & Preparedness Goals For The Rest Of March

I have a few goals that I have written down that need to be finished by the end of the month.

The most important one being to add some more baking supplies to my stockpile. I need to add sugar, flour, shortening, and more to my stockpile. I also want to stock pile some more canned meats. I have about 50 pounds of beans that I need to get some canned ham to season them with. That does not taste too bad and is cheap!!

I also want to get better prepared to being able to cook with out power. I need some more of the Coleman fuel bottles for out Coleman camp stove. I also have a local store that sells me the heat cell fuel cans for $1.00 each. So I plan on buying a case or 2 of those. A goal of buying some extra bags of charcoal for our grill is high up on the list also.

Another goal is to stockpile more condiments and basics. Like soup making items and other such items. Making a simple soup could be a life saver.

I really have a ton of goals that I want to get done. I just hope that I can get them all done by the end of the month. If I can I will just do the most important ones and save the basics for next month. I just am wanting to get these done before too much longer.
