Grow Your Own Vegetables in a Small Space!

Nothing beats fresh vegetables out of your own garden. The taste of a freshly picked tomato is pure heaven and digging your own new, red potatoes is so rewarding. But what do you do if you don't have a large yard or no yard at all? No problem! You can grow a vegetable garden in a container!

Many people think of container gardening as an easy way to grow beautiful flowers and accent patios and porches with color. But have you ever tried adding a few vegetables in with the flowers? Growing vegetables and herbs in containers is just as easy as growing flowers and you get delicious results! You can mix a cherry tomato plant in with a pot of marigolds and snapdragons. The bright red fruit is a beautiful addition to the colorful blooms. Put a couple of red potato starts in a large planter with a few flowers, the foliage of potato plants is very beautiful and you will also have a few tiny white flowers as well.

How about dedicating a few planters to just produce? Strawberries often produce more fruit when planted in a container because they don't have much room to spread. Strawberry plants spread by sending out runners that root down and start a new plant. Once the strawberries run out of room to send out shoots, they put all their energy into producing fruit. How delicious to have fresh strawberries just outside your door!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning a container garden.

Properly prepare your pot. Your pot will need good drainage so make sure it has drainage holes drilled in the bottom. If your pot does not have drainage holes, either drill holes or create a drainage area by adding a layer of gravel at the bottom. If you have a very large pot, you can create a drainage area and eliminate the need for large quantities of soil by adding a layer of Styrofoam at the bottom. This will also make the pot easier to move around. Just remember to add enough soil for the plants to have a good root system.

Don't use garden soil. The soil in your yard is generally too heavy for container use. A container gardening needs light soil that is rich in organic material for proper drainage. Mix regular potting soil with compost and peat moss to get a healthy soil that is perfect for containers. It is a good idea to mix in time release fertilizer while you are mixing the soil. Most time release fertilizers last about three months so plan to add more at that time.

When you are transplanting new plants, dig the hole about twice as large as the plants root ball. Then back fill the hole with some loose soil, this will give the tender roots soft soil to anchor in. Before you place the plant in the hole, massage the roots to break them up slightly. The plant roots have been confined to a small area while they are getting their start, however they need to break free and they need a little help from you to do that.

Give your plants a healthy start by using a root starting fertilizer as you are planting. Mix the liquid fertilizer with water and add it as you plant each new plant to your container. Root starting fertilizers contain the proper nutrients that help to prevent transplant shock.

Trim the plant after you plant it. This is a difficult thing for most gardeners to do. After all you just bought a beautiful, full plant at the store! You need to remember that the plant needs to put effort into building a strong root system. This is difficult if the plant is trying to maintain full blooms or large amounts of foliage as well. A good rule of thumb is to cut off the plant by two thirds. Don't worry, your plant will grow back fuller and healthier than before.

Combine plants with similar requirements. If a plant requires full sun, don't pair it up with a plant that does best in partial shade. Careful planning will yield the best results in container gardening.

Containers are a great way to have fresh produce all summer long. Growing your own fresh produce is rewarding and allows you to provide healthy food for your family. Give container gardening a try, you will love the results!

Stockpile & Preparedness Goals For The Rest Of March

I have a few goals that I have written down that need to be finished by the end of the month.

The most important one being to add some more baking supplies to my stockpile. I need to add sugar, flour, shortening, and more to my stockpile. I also want to stock pile some more canned meats. I have about 50 pounds of beans that I need to get some canned ham to season them with. That does not taste too bad and is cheap!!

I also want to get better prepared to being able to cook with out power. I need some more of the Coleman fuel bottles for out Coleman camp stove. I also have a local store that sells me the heat cell fuel cans for $1.00 each. So I plan on buying a case or 2 of those. A goal of buying some extra bags of charcoal for our grill is high up on the list also.

Another goal is to stockpile more condiments and basics. Like soup making items and other such items. Making a simple soup could be a life saver.

I really have a ton of goals that I want to get done. I just hope that I can get them all done by the end of the month. If I can I will just do the most important ones and save the basics for next month. I just am wanting to get these done before too much longer.

How to Make a Gravity Water Filter

Is your drinking water really safe? Just because it has no odor and tastes fine doesn't mean it is. Many contaminants are too small to see and have no odor. Of course, you can have your water tested and this is the best option to be sure it is safe. But some people still feel their water isn't as pure as they would like.

If you have decided you ought to filter your water but are unsure if it will make any difference, why not make your own trial carbon water filter? It isn't difficult or expensive, and it will give you the option of seeing what carbon can do to improve your water quality.

To begin this project, obtain these items: a twelve inch length of 2 1/2 inch PVC pipe, a 2 1/2 inch cap, a quantity of activated carbon, a piece of vinyl hose, and a paper coffee filter. You will also need a drill and bit the size of the outside diameter of the vinyl hose.

Drill a hole in the center of the PVC cap. Insert the vinyl hose into the hole, making sure it fits tightly. If it leaks, silicone sealant should be used. Push the cap onto the PVC pipe and, if needed, seal it with PVC sealer. Next, fold the piece of filter paper and push it into the PVC pipe so that it covers the hole in the cap.

Add the carbon to the open end of the PVC and pour water over it until it is full. Point the vinyl hose into a container where the filtered water can collect. You may want to discard the first batch of filtered water since it might have washed out contaminants from the project.

A stand can be made with two 4 inch squares of wood, a wooden base and attached upright. Drill a hole in each 4 inch square large enough for the PVC. Then screw the wood blocks to the upright piece and insert your filter. A setscrew can be used in one of the square supports so the PVC does not slide down.

Here are a few things to consider if you make your own filter. First, the longer the pipe, the more water it will hold and the more charcoal it will pass over before exiting the unit. In other words, the longer the PVC pipe, the better it is. Second, periodically replace the carbon and clean out the PVC pipe while it is empty. How often this needs to be done depends on how much water you filter through it.

You may not get a great quantity of water using this inexpensive method, but it will be enough to drink and, if the container is refilled regularly, you can store the purified water for future use.

If this sounds like too much work, consider the Berkey Water Filter line. The Black Berkey purification elements that ship with the Berkey Filters are so powerful, they can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. And since they are gravity fed, no electricity is needed. Virtually no other filtration element can duplicate this performance.

Maps of Nuclear Power Reactors: UNITED STATES

INSCDB: Maps: UNITED STATES

Wanted to share this - I was interested in knowing where most of them are and found this map. I think after looking at this my family might need to move. We are in a earthquake zone and have a bunch of nuclear reactor sites just west of us in Illinois!! Scary!

The Dangers of Radiation Exposure

Radiation is a naturally occurring form of energy that occurs in sunlight and sound waves. However, mankind has harnessed this power through nuclear materials, such as uranium, plutonium, and thorium. These materials can be utilized for weapons, electricity production, and medical devices. While radioactive materials have helped further things like clean energy and medical diagnostics, exposure to the radiation can cause serious damage to your health.

First, everyone experiences small doses of radiation throughout their lives. This is called background radiation. It comes from small amounts of radioactive materials in rocks and dirt, and it can also come from cosmic radiation. Additionally, most people at some point receive medical treatment that involves radiation, such as taking an x-ray. Over time, this low-intensity exposure is mostly harmless although it can increase your chance of developing cancer.

The frightening type of radiation exposure comes from a short-term, intense dose that causes radiation poisoning or sickness. This typically occurs due to radiation accidents. There are several different types of jobs that involve radiation and are therefore at risk for radiation poisoning, including:

Mining or handling nuclear materials
Working in a nuclear power plant
Testing or working with nuclear weapons
Nuclear pharmacists
X-ray technicians
Doctors who perform radiation cancer treatment, vascular embolization, etc.
If something goes wrong, like if the radioactive materials spill in a nuclear pharmacy, the pharmacists can be exposed to a high dose of radiation. This can cause radiation poisoning. Although there are several symptoms of this condition, they may only appear much later after the accident. Immediate signs of exposure include:

Red, painful skin burns
Welts or ulcers where the skin touched the radioactive material
Nausea
Diarrhea
Hair loss
Organ failure
Radiation sickness treatment depends on the extent of your exposure. Doctors must try to remove external contamination, such as radioactive particles on your clothing, as well as nuclear materials inside of your body. Sadly, there is no cure for radiation poisoning, and doctors attempt, instead, to fight the complications arising from the sickness, such as loss of bone marrow, increased risk of infection, etc.

If you have suffered from radiation sickness due to a nuclear accident at work, you may be entitled to workers' compensation to help with your pain and suffering. To discuss your case, contact a New Jersey workers' comp lawyer from Levinson Axelrod, P.A., today.

Dehydrated Bananas

I was sitting and looking at 3 bananas yesterday that no one was going to eat and I thought that I better get them dehydrated before they go bad. I know it was just 3 bananas and probably not worth it , but I loaded up 3 trays and get it started and now have banana chips that everyone wants to eat!!
I dip them in lemon juice before I dehydrate them so they won't turn brown. But do not leave them in the juice for very long - it will start breaking them down and they will be nasty. Believe me. I found this out the first time I ever did bananas. I though that I should leave them in the juice for a few minutes , but all it did was turn them to mush. YUCK!
They are a really good snack when they are done. You can also add them to oatmeal. Which is very yummy. My kids love to eat oatmeal that has some fruit added to it. That is one of the reasons I dehydrate so much fruit. Like Strawberries, blueberries, bananas, peaches, etc - you get the picture.

Can We Ever REALLY Be Prepared Enough??

After everything that has been going on in the world the past few weeks, it has me wondering if we can ever really be prepared enough. Something is going to happen that we are not prepared for. Something is going to be worse than we ever thought that it could be and we are going to be left unprepared and in shock that it could be that bad. Worse than we ever imagined. All that I can do is get my family prepared as well as I can and hope for the best.

We need to start praying and get prepared spiritually as well!!
