First let us find out what "off the grid" living means. Living off the grid simply means removing all dependency on fossil fuel and turning to cleaner sources of energy. We are all aware of what is happening to our environment. The effects of global warming can now be felt all over the world. Extreme catastrophes are now being attributed to global warming and other environmental deterioration that we are experiencing right now. Tsunamis, earthquakes, typhoons and hurricanes according to experts have been more frequent and more devastating these past decades than ever before. Governments all over the world have been exerting efforts to keep everyone informed through their own Climate Change Committee.
Today, there are people who have recognized the bad effects of global warming and have already chosen not just to sit around and listen but to do something as well. These people have already chosen to live off the grid. No fossil fuels. No electricity from independent power sources or even water supplied in their homes using artificial electric sources. What they use are power generated from renewable energy. Renewable energy is energy generated from clean sources like sun, water and wind. Sounds difficult? Not at all! You may think it but the truth is there are actually a lot of benefits that can be derived from living off the grid.
The Environment is safer
By choosing to change from fossil fuel to renewable energy you are contributing in making the environment a safer world to live in. Renewable energy like solar power and wind energy as well as hydro-power are all energy sources that can be harnessed naturally. There are no harmful by-products and you can continually use these energies without harming or polluting the environment.
Fossil fuel when used emit harmful by products that are thrown in different forms in the environment. When burned, fossil fuels emit harmful nitrates such as nitrogen oxide which returns to the earth creating acid rain and others. These byproducts are the reasons for global warming. Living off the grid, when learned and practiced my many others will have a huge impact on our environment. It might even stop global warming right off its track. Experts believe that with proper information campaign people will start to see this one great benefit of living off the grid.
Reduced To Zero Energy Expense
When you are just starting to live off the grid you may think you are spending more than by just staying on conventional power sources. But the truth is you are investing to something worthwhile, safer and cheaper in the long run. Buying solar panels or preparing your house to be totally dependent on hydro-power can be a bit expensive at first because of all the preparations you are going to do. But you will feel the benefits of not having monthly electric, water and gas bills after some time. What you will install will actually be used for a very long time.
You're Contribution And Influence To Others
There are now many people who have chosen to live off the grid. But they are not that many to have a huge impact on the environment. If you start living off the grid you will now have influence on your family, friends, relatives, acquaintances and many others. Because it is fairly new to us there are still a lot of misconceptions about living off the grid. But if you yourself will be an experts by actually getting into it then these people within your circle will already have somebody to actually teach them or tell them facts about living off the grid.
Living off the grid might be something new to us. It might sound even farfetched to be totally independent from fossil fuels. But we can see that it can be done and it is already being done by a considerable number of people today. This is something we can do for our environment. And as we can see the benefits of living off the grid are worth trying.

Fun Recipes For The Little Ones
I am already thinking about this winter and being closed up in the house and how boring it can get. I have found a bunch of recipes to make things for little ones. Stuff that they can use and have fun with and parents not worry about them being toxic or unsafe. YAY!!
Simple Play Dough
1 cup flour
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup water
Gradually add water to flour and oatmeal in bowl. Kneed until mixed (this dough is sticky, but unique in texture.) Model as with clay.
Salt Dough
Equal amounts salt and flour; then add enough water to make it doughy. Dries hard in a couple of days and then you can paint it. I love salt dough. You can make some really nice Christmas ornaments out of it. Painting them makes them really nice. The kids could make some for gifts, maybe?
Earth Friendly Goo
1 cup water
1 cup cornstarch
4-5 drops fruit juice like blueberry or raspberry (combine a 1/4 cup of the food with 2 cups water, simmer for an hour. Cool, strain, and use as coloring).
Work the ingredients together and let your kids have fun with this gooey concoction.
Natural and Safe Finger Paint
1/3 cup soap flakes melted with 1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup cornstarch
1/3 cup cold water
A few drops juice dyes (combine a 1/4 cup of the colored food like beets, blueberries, or raspberries with 2 cups water, simmer for an hour. Cool, strain, and use as coloring).
Silly Putty
2 cups white school glue
1 cup liquid starch
Mix together and set aside until dry. Store in an airtight container.
Peanut Butter Play Dough
18 oz. peanut butter
6 tbsps. honey
Non-fat dry milk
Cocoa for flavor
Mix all ingredients, adding enough dry milk to give make dough pliable. Shape, decorate with edible treats, and eat!
These are some really fun things for kids to do. When they get bored let them try these things out. Before they know it the day has passed and they forgot that they were bored.
