Winter Camping

Camping during the winter takes more planning than during the warmer months. Follow these tips to ensure that you are ready for anything that the winter months might throw at you:

•    Check the weather forecast before you go. Prepare for anything that might happen with the weather. Have warm clothing, dry clothing, blankets, heat, etc.
•    Tell someone where you will be camping and when you’ll be back. Let someone know exactly where you will be camping and for how long. Have an alternative communication just in case your cell phone has no service.
•    Pack more food, water, clothes, and firewood than you think you’ll need. You never know if you might get stuck or what might happen. You could get wet somehow, so make sure you have extra clothing.
•    Make sure sleeping bags and equipment are rated for the conditions. You can get some really great sleeping bags that are rated for very cold weather.
•    Layer your clothing, beginning with a wicking  layer, followed by insulating garments, topped by a wind and/or waterproof shell. Layers are so much better than just wearing one heavy layer.
•    Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Be on the watch for signs of them.
•    Drink plenty of water. It can be easier to get dehydrated without realizing it in the cold. Bring clean water with you and also have a way to get clean water with a personal water filter.
•    Prepare warm and hearty meals. A great way to keep warm is to have warm food and fill up with hearty food.
